Interview with David Barnett (SIS)
Why does it take Suede so long to record a new album?
They actually started on the 31st may, so it's only
been four months so far which isn't really that long.
But they are perfectionists and the album will come
out when it's ready and not before.
Can you reveal anything about the influence Alex will
have on Suede's musical direction?
It's not really for me to say, although I suspect he
may bring more guitars to Suede than the last album.
He's also co-written a couple of songs, including
Beautiful Loser which is an absolute corker.
How is Neil doing at the moment? Are there any chances
of him to return to Suede?
He seems to be a lot better but I can't imagine him
returning to the limelight for some time. However,
there will be some of his songs on the new record.
And Simon on the DVD is co-written by Neil.
Will the new album title be revealed one letter at a
time, just like SIS did with Head Music?
That was a joke that got out of hand. So, no.
Can you tell anything about a new tour? Will Suede
ever play in the USA again?
Absolutely no live plans at all at the moment. A
boring answer i know, but true.
In the latest SIS issue, it was revealed a secret
project is started. Can you tell anything about it,
or was this about the DVD?
It was indeed about the dvd. the pics in the fanzine
are from the evening they did the commentary round my
flat. It's absolutely hilarious, you'll love it.
The DVD which will be released in November is said to
contain "rarities from around the world and exclusive
footage never seen anywhere before". Do you have more
details on which rarities?
There's a short film for each album. A couple of these
you'll have seen - we've used the Europe Is Our
Playground promo for Coming Up and the Give Me Head
film for Head Music. But the stuff for Suede and Dog
Man Star hasn't been seen before and it's rather ace,
very nostalgic! And of course there's the opening
credits from Far From China to accompany the new song.
There's also the full length versions of all the videos,
including the American Drowners and Australian Can't
Get Enough. a few of these have never been shown all
the way through. There's definitely plenty you won't
have seen. The best bit is undoubtedly the commentary
which is like having suede in your front room for an
hour and a half. And the karaoke's cool too - even if
you don't want to sing along the instrumental versions
are fascinating cos you can hear loads of bits you'd
usually miss on the records. Aye.
Many people complain they haven't got a DVD-player.
Will the DVD be released as VHS too?
Yes, but it won't feature any of the special extras.
the VHS will have about 90 minutes of stuff on it. The
DVD will have about 4 or 5 hours.
There are many Suede bootlegs in circulation. What's the
band's policy/opinion about bootlegging?
I think they're probably quite flattered when it's live
gigs and stuff like that. But pirates of officially
released stuff is another matter.
How many people are SIS member? Has this been increased
or decreased since Head Music?
There's still a few thousand. obviously it's dipped
slightly since there's not much been going on, but that
always happens between albums.
At this moment, a credit card is (nearly) required to
signup to the SIS. Will the introduction of the Euro
offer more possibilities to pay the SIS fee?
This is definitely something we want to do. we're all
pro-euro here.
This year there's no fanclub gig. Will there be some kind
of compensation for SIS members?
we've always said fanclub gigs happen when they happen -
they are bonuses. There were about ten of them in 1999,
so it's not a question of "compensation". Having said
that, I think we'll have a few things going on for fanclub
members in the not too distant future . . .
