TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwanese music will again blast this year's annual MIDEM music industry market, the Government Information Office (GIO) announced yesterday. Sodagreen, Taiwan Soul and Dream T will perform in Cannes, France on Jan. 20, in a segment called “Taiwan Night” in the world's biggest and most influential music trade fair. All three will discover France's musical scene for the first time. Speaking at an event held in the afternoon, Government Spokesperson Su Jun-pin said that promoting a stage for the three Taiwanese bands at the MIDEM festival is an important step in assisting the Taiwanese music industry to make a name for itself in the international arena. He expressed confidence that Taiwanese indie, traditional and experimental music will have even broader room in which to develop in the future. Sodagreen was formed in 2001. It is now composed of lead vocalist Wu Ching-feng, bassist Hsieh Shin-yi, guitarists Liu Chia-kai, Shih Chun-wei and Ho Jing-yang, and pianist Kung Yu-chi. In 2001, they won the award for “most welcomed band” for their song Spy, which was the lead track of their first album. The band also won the prizes for best band, best songwriting, best lyrics and best composition. Taiwan Soul is composed of Taiwan top aboriginal singers such as Kao Hui-chun and Kao Lei-ya, Lee Shou-hsin, Chou Heng-yi, and Huang Ting-yao. Founded by Lim Giong, a Taipei-based computer and music artist, Dream T focuses on multi-media arts and the exploration of Taiwanese culture, including traditional hand-puppetry, dance and theatre. MIDEM offers access to thousands of professionals from the record, live music, publishing, digital and mobile and branding sectors from more than 90 countries. The 43rd edition will be held Jan. 18-22. It is the second time in 14 years that Taiwanese bands will perform at the Midem.
