New York Times: The songs, all written for her, are about hookups, breakups
and adult pleasures, and they are set in the synthetic virtual world of
radio-ready pop. Rihanna is clearly aware of competition from Lady Gaga, the
Black Eyed Peas and Kesha, and she’s keeping pace. Even through Auto-Tune,
her voice holds its tangy individuality.
Slant Magazine: The singer hasn’t embraced—or exploited, depending on how
you want to look at it—her Caribbean roots this much since her debut, and
after hearing the entire album, her “loud” red hair and floral-pattern
dresses make that much more sense.
Washington Post: This album makes you wonder if Rihanna’s ever lived
anywhere else than behind a microphone. She’s a technician above all, and
can credit her success to a massive fan base that finds such uber-precision
irresistible.
NME Magazine: That voice, when she exploits the grit of that Barbadian burr
to the max, is more unique and richly textured than ever, and that and her
crack production team are all the personality . Actions after all, are louder
than words.
The Canadian Press: “Loud,” an 11-track set that is top-notch from its
opener, the jamming fetish-revealer “S&M” to the closing number, the sequel
to the riveting abuse tale “Love the Way You Lie,” where Eminem this time
takes a back seat to Rihanna’s emotional roller coaster ride. And what’s in
between is equally as fulfilling — or better.
New York Daily News: Rihanna’s new disk is a thrilling refutation of her
previous “Rated R.” Where that disk brooded with dark rhythms and dire
pronouncements, “Loud” flirts and struts with joy. In every way that “R”
sounded forced and self-conscious, the new one seems effortless and free. –

evolution of Rihanna”, this fifth album more accurately asserts the return
of good-time girl Rihanna following last year’s murky, rage-fuelled Rated R.
