Transcript of Madonna at the Today Show
MATT: Two years since we last sat down and a little has happened in
your
life.
MADONNA: yea just a teeny tiny bit
MATT: new marriage, new baby, World Tour, new CD,
MADONNA: keep going
MATT: What am I leaving out?
MADONNA: New Movie
MATT: What else?
MADONNA: two new houses
MATT: You have been a busy little girl
MADONNA: New circles under my eyes (Laughing out loud)
MATT: Are you tired has it been that busy of a year?
MADONNA: I am exhausted and I have not stopped since...let's see we got
married last year and actually Sunday will be our anniversary.
MATT: By the way Happy Anniversary
MADONNA: Thank You, Sunday will be 1 year
MATT: marriage peaches and cream, a walk in the park, hard work?
MADONNA: Is that my only choice?
MATT: You can add anything you want
MADONNA: None of the above, LOL, its an incredible experience, it has
been
an incredible experience and I think my husband and I are very well
suited
for each other. He is incredibly strong-willed, opinionated and full of
life and adventurous and intelligent, but with all of that you also get
ummm opinionated and strong-willed and LOL.
MATT: lol But you're the same way?
MADONNA: I KNOW, I know but i could never be with anyone else, you know
anyone who was not like that. Strong people need to be with strong
people.
MATT: Yea but when you get to the strong-willed and opinionated and you
butt heads on those things, who walks away first cause someone has to?
MADONNA: We usually come to a point when we know that both of us are
acting like babies, and its sort of like we take turns like sometimes
it
will be my turn to continue acting like a baby and then he will say
he's
sorry, and then I have done that a few times and then its his turn to
do
it so..
MATT: Do you ever say you're sorry when you're not sorry?
MADONNA: Yea, Absolutely
MATT: Yea Me too.
MADONNA: LOL. DO you want your marriage to last?
MATT: LOL Exactly you learn to say you're sorry.
MATT: Is is true that you and Mr Ritchie had your very first date in
this
room?
MADONNA: More or less yes. he called on me for a tea but actually he
showed up a day early, he showed up on the wrong day which I thought
was
really sweet. Isn't that sweet?
MATT: a little anxious
MADONNA: No he has a very bad memory, anxious had nothing to do with it
LOL.
MATT: Lourdes is what 4 or 5 now?
MADONNA: 5
MATT: She had it pretty good for a while just you and her, and now
these
two guys move it to the house has she handling it?
MADONNA: She was quite jealous at first, competitive more with Guy
cause
she did have me all to her self and was like who is this stranger
walking
into my life? But we did it very, very slowly and we had a very long
courtship so that was an adjustment at first, and she sort of refused
to
speak to him for a while, but Guy played it right and he is really,
really
good with her and than I had Rocco and there was sort of a tiny little
hiccup kind of moment when it seemed as she was heading toward his bed
for
a strangulation but she's great with him now (giggles)
MATT: You mentioned shooting a movie with Guy umm I think i read
somewhere
where it was either gonna make or break your relationship?
MADONNA: Yea I think I said something like that and it was a challenge.
MATT: How big a test was it?
MADONNA: Huge, huge I think so deserve a medal for getting through it
lol
MATT: lol more so than he?
MADONNA: Yea well I think to a certain extent cause he was the director
and he was in charge you know what i mean? And I had to really take off
my
wife hat when I came to work everyday, and there would be lots of times
when he would be directing and I would think "ohh he is not being very
nice to me" and "he is being dismissive or with me or whatever, and
then I
would think that's not the actress thinking that's the wife. I would
get
really confused, do you know what I mean?
MATT: If you go home at night sit and eat dinner and you have a fight
and
you cross words than you go to work next day now you're the actress?
MADONNA: A lot of times I choose to not have a fight with him or bring
up
things that bothered me cause i did not want to bring it to work. Umm I
had to seriously pick my choose my battles, and it was good for me
cause
im the kind of person if the littlest thing bothers me I want to be
confrontational I want to get it over with and solve the problem and
its
not always a good idea to go that route. Sometimes you have to sit back
and think about things and I had to do a lot of that, Umm so a great
lesson in humility.
MATT: Several books have come out about you.
She crosses her arms more tightly.
MADONNA: (smirking) OH SHUT UP, don't analyze me.
MATT: Not one was authorized
MADONNA Well of course
MATT: What did you think these? Give me some words to describe them.
MADONNA: (BLEEP) (BLEEP) everyone who wrote them.
MATT: British word LOL. Give me some more definitions or some more
adjectives.
MADONNA: I cant say on tv, every time I say a bad word everyone gets
upset.
MATT: What can you say on Tv?
MADONNA: Stupidity I mean they're just a waste of time they're a waste
of
everybodys time. The idea that you're writing a book about someone that
you have never met and presumably you have interviewed absolutely no
one
who truly knows the person what is the point I mean its purely...
MATT: well you know the point
MADONNA: Its based on money
MATT: Right. Do you object to there right to do it?
MADONNA: No i believe in freedom of the press, you know but I don't
have
to like it.
MATT: I have a question that im trying to ask but ...I don't know how
to
ask you this.
MADONNA: and I keep interrupting you.
MATT: Seriously. I don't know how to ask you this.
MADONNA: Wait think before you ask me
MATT: It's not a bad question. In the course of your career you have
done
so much to change, re-invent yourself and to stay in the public eye
different personas, different outfits...
MADONNA: NO wait a minute, wait a minute
MATT: No but I have not asked the question yet?
MADONNA: No but I have to correct you. I have not done so much to stay
in
the public eye, I have done so much. I have been productive, I have
been
creative.
MATT: with what purpose? To get people to buy your records.
MADONNA: No thats too simplified absolutely not.
MATT: To express yourself?
MADONNA: YES, because I am an artist and I have to create and I have to
write music and I want to act. Those things make me feel good!
MATT: You said some of your early music ....
Madonna: Makes me barf!
MATT: Well i think you said ... "makes me sick" Why?
Madonna: Well I dunno, come on
MATT: Okay which song?
Madonna: Material girl .. Hello! It's funny ... It has kid value u know
what i mean
MATT: What other song would fall under that category?
Madonna: Like A Virgin
MATT: Oh really!
Madonna: I mean they are great songs...and they are of an era...and all
that.. but do i wannna sit and listen to it?.... do i wanna perform
it?..NO!...my songs are like a map of my life and they all mean
something
to me... they are like tattoos...they happened in a certain time of my
life and if i listen to them i go back and know exactly what i was
doing
and how i was feeling.
MATT: When you sit down to do this very creative title GHV2 (sarcastic
laugh by M) I mean were they other working titles?
Madonna:Ahh listen I just finished the tour and i was going of to make
a
movie ... I couldn't think straight I mean we tried lots of things..
MATT:So you called it GHV2.. How did you chose what to put on it
because
you had a lot to choose from? You said that you had to listen to each
song
5 times in a row.. if you were upset then it wasnt going to be on the
album.
Madonna: Yes thats correct basically to symbolize the second half of my
Music career i had to listen to the songs in a loop.
MATT: If someone who hasnt heard of Madonna and listens to this album
wholly not representative of your music in general how because some of
the
songs on this album are not singles but are pretty good songs
Madonna: Well it can't be called greatest hits because they were not
hits
MATT: Or otherwise call it "My Favourites"
Madonna: Oh i understand.... maybe!
MATT: Which is an almost good title btw! (laughs)
MATT: You are trying to get tacky here
Madonna: Whatever! you can remember it
MATT: This summer you embarked on your world tour which was sold and
you
got an enormous amount of exposure. Did you expect that?
Madonna: I have to say i didnt have any expectations when i started it
...
i wanted a show that was entertaining all around from a visual aspect
and
an audio aspect and i wanted to take the show in a sort of a journey...
I
didnt try to be edgy. My sensibilites are unconventional and i like
things
that are provocative
MATT: Concerning the turner awards in london you talked about freedom
of
expression and freedom of speech...
Madonna: No i didnt talk about freedom of speech or freedom of
expression... I talked about how silly award shows are..
MATT: Okay then you said (reads madonnas turner prize transcript....
two
words were bleeped ...ofcourse!)
Madonna: i did say that ..wow for once somebody quotes me right!
MATT: You created a bit of a stir here didnt you?
Madonna: Yeah whatever as if nobody says that word
MATT: On live television!
Madonna: That was a contemporary art award so...
MATT: Do you have any regrets
Madonna: Absolutely not!.. people expect that sort of thing from me.
MATT: You know what? you're right!
Madonna: The thing is ... I'll tell you the real reason...they wanted
to
read my script... they wanted me to give them a copy of my speech and i
said no and they kept trying to get the information from whatever way
and
they wanted to know how long it was... how much time it would take.. i
just felt insulted... and they asked me how would i like to be
introduced
... i said Mrs Ritchie.... they said we cant do that coz everybody
knows
you as Madonna ....c'mon cant we just play around a bit ... and they
said
no profanities
MATT: It sure was a open invitation
Madonna: definitely!
MATT: So if we sit and chat in two years... what do you want to have
accomplished between this time?
Madonna: I'd like to record, shoot... travel more... i'm writing a
script
which is taking longer than i thought coz i keep getting distracted by
other projects and maybe direct it .. i dunno
MATT: Do you wanna act?
Madonna: Yes and i want to learn how to drive on the wrong side of the
road.
MATT: you havent driven here?
Madonna: Yes i have and my husband freaks out so i'm going to get
somebody
to teach me.
MATT: So you're gonna go riding in those cars with the "student driver"
on
it
Madonna: No its gonna be low key and oh yes i want to learn horse
riding.
MATT: Wow that's a lot... Merry Xmas!
Madonna: Merry Xmas
