April 18 was a tough day for leehom.
Early in the morning, he received shocking (莫名其妙) news
from the staff of SonyBmg Taiwan about the misleading write-ups in
Taiwan newspapers on a love affair falsely claimed by a girl Leehom
only met once. This kind of 緋聞炒作的新聞 is always so unfair and
unjustified, but the scandal reported this time had really crossed
the line. Leehom and his friends were perplexed to say the least.
Upon arriving the concert hall for sound check, Leehom was told that
the Nagoya concert tickets did not sell very well. The reasons given
were: no promotion was done for this city, and that Tuesday is not a
popular day for holding concerts. Leehom was told that he would be
performing later that night in a venue with half the seats empty.
Typically, he speaks very little on the day of a concert performance,
but that day, Leehom was completely silent. We all knew he was under
a great deal of stress, but we also knew that as soon as he began to
play his piano and get himself immersed in his songs, he would be
fine. And he was.
During the concert he addressed the enthusiastic fans. "Thank you for
giving me the opportunity to do today what I've always love most, even
as a young child - To play my music". I wonder if the fans understood
that at that moment, although Leehom was the performer on stage, they
were giving more to him than the other way round.
In recent years the Taiwanese media has grown less and less
responsible, and anyone with a name or a reputation has paid the
price. It seems as if it has gotten to the point where as long as
someone is willing to say something, the press is willing to report it
just so they can sell more copies of their publication.
只要有人敢講, 媒體就敢寫-This is a daunting and troublesome phenomenon,
which can hopefully change in the future.
In the meantime, there is no need to worry about Leehom. He is not
going to waste his time or energy on this bit of worthless gossip, or
any other for that matter. He will continue to work hard at what he
loves, and to play for the audiences who come to hear him.
