Taiwanese singer Wang Lee Hom won the best Asian artist award. (Story by Suwitcha Chaiyong, Photographs courtesy of Channel [V] Thailand) Did you Know? Wang Lee Hom was born in Rochester, New York, USA The Channel [V] Awards keep getting bigger each year and this year’s ceremony played host to quite a few international stars. What is supposed to be an event to recognise the best in local and foreign music seemed to focus more on the foreign this year. Making appearances were the UK’s Jamelia, South Korea’s Baby VOX, Japan’s The Gospellers and the crowd favourite, Taiwan’s Wang Lee Hom. It seemed that any time Wang blinked, the crowd went wild. While these international stars may have overshadowed the locals, there was still time to pass out a few awards to the Thais. Director Nattapol Mukkan was the biggest local winner, taking home with three awards, including best director and best music video for his work on Taxi’s ꄊ免id Tueng Chan Mai Waela Tee Ther (Do You Miss Me When You…?).” #Perfect performances The highlights of the night, however, weren’t the awards but the performances. Jamelia and Baby VOX wowed the crowd with their sets, and fans were willing to forgive the obvious lip-synching. Ms Sexy, Naughty and Bitchy, Tata Young, went for a “sexy” look in what was her first local awards show since heading off to be a big star abroad. She sang two predictable songs, “I Believe” and “Sexy, Naughty, Bitchy.” The slow, mature sound of The Gospellers didn’t seem to do much for the locals , especially since the show was beginning to drag on, and on and on. But the biggest thrill of the night was when Wang Lee Hom turned the night into his own mini-concert/publicity event. The Taiwanese heartthrob not only won the best Asian artist award but really had the crowd in a frenzy with his songs. And in a surprise appearance, the godfather of Thai pop, Thongchai McIntyre (Bird), came on to present an award, as well as remind the crowd he is still the king of the Thai pop music scene.
