Depeche Mode races 67-1 on European Top 100 Albums with its new, 12th studio
set "Sounds of the Universe" (Mute/EMI), while Lady Gaga's "Poker Face"
(Interscope/Universal) moves into a tenth week atop European Hot 100 Singles.
The Depeche Mode album is new at No. 1 in Germany, Switzerland, Austria,
Italy, Spain, Sweden, Hungary, No. 2 in the United Kingdom, France, Norway
and Portugal, and No. 3 in Ireland. It holds at No. 2 in Flanders and rises
3-2 in the neighboring Belgian region of Wallony, 38-1 in Denmark and 4-1 in
Finland.
In 2005, Mode's previous studio album "Playing The Angel" started at the
pan-European summit with No. 1 debuts in ten markets. That set opened with
U.K. sales of 32,000, about 2,000 more than the new release. The band's "Tour
of the Universe" begins in Israel May 10 and Depeche Mode appears on the
extended version of BBC Two's "Later... With Jools Holland" in the United
Kingdom tomorrow (May 1) following the April 28 live edition of the show.
Lady Gaga's Europe-wide reign with "The Fame" is thus limited to one week, as
she falls to No. 2, although that debut album spends a fourth as the U.K.'s
favorite, with cumulative sales of 396,000. It's up 7-5 in Denmark but down
1-2 in Ireland, where local legend Christy Moore debuts at No. 1 with "Listen."
U2's "No Line on the Horizon" (Mercury/Universal) is down 2-3 overall, with a
highest ranking this week of No. 3 again in Denmark. Beyonce's "I Am... Sasha
Fierce" (Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment), remarkably, makes the
pan-European top five for the first time, rising 7-4 after a 7-3 climb in the
United Kingdom, where sales to last weekend were 569,000 over 23 weeks.
Kings of Leon's "Only By The Night" (Hand Me Down/Sony Music Entertainment)
falls 3-5 on the aggregate survey, while Diana Krall is down 4-6 with "Quiet
Nights" (Verve/Universal). "Night" dips 2-4 in the United Kingdom while
"Nights" falls 1-2 in Hungary, 2-3 in Portugal and 6-9 in France, but improves
6-5 in Greece and scores a No. 5 debut in Spain.
Pink, who completes a U.K. tour with three nights at London's O2 Arena from
tomorrow (Friday), is up 12-7 on Top 100 Albums with "Funhouse" (LaFace/Sony
Music Entertainment). Her U.K. presence helps the album up 21-10 there, and
the single "Please Don't Leave Me" 23-13. "Funhouse" is also up 26-4 in
Ireland, after two shows at Dublin's O2 Arena April 19-20. A massive
Australian leg of the tour begins May 22.
German vocalist Andrea Berg, whose "Zwischen Himmel und Erde" (Ariola/Sony
Music Entertainment) debuted at No. 5 on the pan-European listing two weeks
before falling to No. 14, jumps back to No. 8, after moving 4-2 in Germany.
The album is certified platinum in Austria and double platinum in Germany,
where Berg starts an arena tour May 20 in Chemnitz.
A German debut at No. 3 helps Belgian singer-songwriter Milow to his
first-ever showing in the top ten of the composite European album chart with
his self-titled third album via Homerun at No. 9. His cover of 50 Cent,
Justin Timberlake and Timbaland's "Ayo Technology" is at No. 2 in Germany and
Austria and No. 3 in Switzerland, holding at No. 8 on the European Hot 100.
Leonard Cohen's "Live In London" (Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment) is down
to No. 10 on Top 100 Albums after three weeks at No. 6.
"Poker Face" continues to reign in the GSA (Germany, Switzerland, Austria)
territories, but falls 1-2 in Flanders. Flo-Rida's "Right Round" (Atlantic/
Warner Music) is unlucky again on the European Hot 100, spending a seventh
week at No. 2 while another stubborn seller, "Takin' Back My Love" (Interscope/
Universal) by Enrique Iglesias featuring Ciara, is in a fifth week at No. 3.
