6 ACTORS WHO COULD BECOME THE NEXT JAMES BOND
July 8, 2015 Written by Evan Symon Published in Movies Read 342 times
With Daniel Craig expected to step aside in the next few years, we take a
look at what actor could become the next James Bond.
Connery, Lazenby, Moore (kinda), Dalton, Brosnan, and Craig. Only a handful
have played Bond in an official capacity over the years. With Daniel Craig
announcing that he only has another 5 years tops as Bond, there has been
rampant speculation on who can fill those iconic shoes. We gathered some of
the rumored names, as well as some of the more “out there” actors to see
who has the best chance of being the next Bond, based on action experience,
spy experience and credibility as Bond. We started off with a favorite in the
news...
1. Idris Elba
http://goo.gl/Bw4FmR
Experience:
Elba is no stranger to action – Pacific Rim, The Wire, Thor and American
Gangster have seen to that. He can handle a gun and has proved to give icy
cold performances much like Timothy Dalton (The Wire, Pacific Rim), as well
as a smattering of humor like Connery (but not up to Roger Moore levels –
such as in Thor). Plus with sex appeal and a knack for accents, Elba seems
like the total package to be Bond.
Going Against:
Elba's name has been floating around for a few years, with fans, press, and
even some studio executives wanting him in. So what is going against him?
Well some people, including Roger Moore, don't think he's “English” enough
for such a role. While discredited, Elba himself has said, thanks to the
media hyping him up, that it means he will not be picked. Elba is definitely
one of the best candidates out there, but his chances go down a tad with all
the over-speculation.
2. Colin Firth
http://goo.gl/vWtiQB
Experience:
While Firth has the acting nailed down to a "T" (Academy Award – The King's
Speech), he has limited experience with spy and action films. Kingsman was a
recent success and showed he can still kick ass and take names in a
Bond-esque way, he hasn't done much like that in the past. Still, a Bond
actor with an Oscar could really ramp up the emotional drive and could
perhaps make Bond movies a bit more expanded in the character department.
Going Against:
The lack of many action movies or even non-drama movies in general play
against him. He has proven he can do the genre, but is currently going back
to more indie and drama-filled movies. Plus, at 54, he might have only one or
two Bond films in him before he has to give up the reins. Firth is a
longshot, but due to recent successes, a candidate nonetheless.
3. Henry Cavill
http://goo.gl/iFeuIJ
Experience:
With Superman showing his action chops and The Man from UNCLE showing off his
spy side, Henry Cavill is another much speculated name. Back in 2005 he was
nearly chosen as Bond at the age of 22. Thirty years of maturing in a mix of
action, spy, and drama movies and shows makes him yet another god candidate.
The only other actor considered at that young of an age, Timothy Dalton, was
also denied, only to get the role 15 years later. In 2020, Cavill could pull
a Dalton – it's as if he has been training for the role all his life.
Going Against:
With the less than stellar Superman performance, and a somewhat lack of
really actiony films until the new 10's, Cavill would have to have much to
prove. His real shot is in The Man from UNCLE, as his character of Napoleon
Solo is pretty much a slightly more humorous Bond. If he pulls it off, it is
an easy hop to Bond. But if it turns out to be ill-fitting, it may not work
out. Time is on his side to give a good Bond-esque performance, but with
UNCLE, it may be his only.
4. Damian Lewis
http://goo.gl/ab8nFG
Experience:
As a gun-toting Marine on Homeland, a gun toting soldier on Band of Brothers
and a gun toting detective on Life, Lewis has definitely shown he can do
action. Throw in an Emmy and a Golden Globe for his acting, and Lewis seems
like an ideal choice. He's British, mid 40's and has mannerisms from all the
previous Bonds. Bookmakers love him too as he is currently the number one bet
to be the next Bond.
Going Against:
Like Elba, most of the reason people say he can't be Bond are pretty petty.
Orange hair is an issue for some reason – Connery had a toupee and others
had their hair dyed – so if it bothers them why not just a quick dye job?
But there is also the fact that all f his intense roles as of yet have been
American characters. Unlike everyone else, including Firth, Lewis never has
done action as a British man – only American or various other nationalities.
While not the end of the world, not being British is a BIG thing for many
Bond fans, sine he is a British character and all. Despite this he still has
more than a good shot at being Bond.
5. Michael Fassbender
http://goo.gl/uXpWfF
Experience:
Playing Magneto, an Inglorious Basterd, a crazed IRA member and an Academy
Award winning role as a psychopathic slave owner definitely gives new meaning
to the word “range”. But it also proves that he has the action backing need
for being Bond. Tons of roles with action, international intrigue, pitched
fights and gunplay pretty much write the resume as a guy who wants to play
Bond.
Going Against:
For one, Fassbender s not English, or even born in the UK. He's German, but
raised in Ireland when he was two. Fassbender also has the whole “Magneto”
thing working against him. Like Cavill with Superman, he is quickly being
seen as THE Magneto – a typecast situation which doomed actors such as
Christopher Reeves. Still, if he can get out of Magneto-mode, he can make for
an excellent Bond.
6. Tom Hardy
http://goo.gl/eAQxAl
Experience:
Bane. Mad Max. Spy movies like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Gun heavy movies
like Inception. Hardy is another one of those actors who seem to have gone to
Bond theme camp. Under 40 with good experience in pretty much every genre
Bond movies cover, Hardy is definitely a good choice for Bond, right up there
with Lewis and Elba.
Going Against:
Hardy has signed on for more Mad Max movies. Plus, with him still being
recognizable as Bane, the “Geek's Action hero” that is Tom Hardy could be a
bit pressed to fit in yet another iconic character that requires them to melt
into the role. Hardy has been able to do it so far, but after more Mad Max
movies that might be a bit hard. But if he proves to still be “unknown”
while being in other major roles, he could prove to be a major contender.
Verdict:
Right now, Elba and Lewis seem to be neck to neck. Elba being the first black
Bond can be exciting, as can Lewis bringing in a hard yet soft style of
acting that no Bond character has really brought to the plate before. It is
still a bit too early o jump to conclusions, but one thing is for certain –
there is no shortage of excellent candidates.
