HE THOUGHT OF WARS
Damon Albarn is to reaffirm his anti-war stance with the forthcoming
video to Blur's new single, 'Out Of Time'.
Shot on board a US navy warship on duty in the Gulf last October, the
film - which takes the form of a fly-on-the-wall documentary - focuses on
the daily life of one female marine.
Cut from a previously televised BBC documentary, the music promo provides
a moving portrait of a woman who is separated from her partner (a marine
serving on another ship) and her young son who remains at home in America.
None of the band are featured in the video, with the audience left to
draw their own parallels between the highly topical images and the poignant
lyrics of the song.
Director John Hardwick - who is due to work on all music videos for the
band's new LP, 'Think Tank' - said the correlation between the two comes
down to feelings of distance and loss.
"The idea to cut doc footage into video came when I watched the
correspondent film 'Warship'," he said.
"It occurred to me that some of the personnel revealed in that film
communicated a fragility that I felt was echoed in the song.
"The video offers an alternative perspective on the individuals who
exist at the sharp end of government policy by portraying the armed
forces as being staffed by people who have the same needs as all others.
"Like the song the video is a tender piece of work about distance and
loss. It aims to distil the song's beauty into a new and unexpected
place."
'Out Of Time' - Blur's first single in over two years - is released in
the UK on April 14. 'Think Tank' is due to reach stores on May 5.
