We had a great conversation about being sexy, her recent split from Matthew Knowles as her manager, her career, and her various business ventures, as well as her faith. Michelle made mention of those who have criticized her career path and moves forward in her God given destiny. Melonie Wallace: Hi Michelle good to hear from you let’s start off by taking about what’s new... Michelle Williams: Well, I currently on Broadway with CHICAGO and I am playing the lead role of Roxie Hart, a sassy and very ambitious lady who will do anything to be a star. I was also in the London on West End, which is like the states Broadway, playing the same role. I am the first African American Roxie in London. I am proud of that. In January, I made the decision to end a 10-year relationship with my management team to pursue other opportunities. This was difficult to do because of our closeness but it was a business decision and not personal at all. So now, here I am...me against the world...making decisions that were otherwise made for me. I am reinventing myself, trying new things and being more upfront and out there. It is liberating but yet scary at the same time...LOL...but I am smart and I can make it with...as long as God is on my side, and He said he would never leave me so I am good! I am exploring new businesses. I have always wanted to have my own bath and body line so now I am pursuing it. I am writing more...about my life experiences...what I have been through and what I am looking forward to. I am looking to write more with other artists as well. Melonie: Recently I saw on your tweeter Christians can be sexy too, tell us how that ideal come about? Michelle: Well, Someone asked me about singing Christian music while playing a sexy character (Roxie). My response to that was Christians can be sexy too! LOL. Just because a woman is a Christian doesn't mean we should not be attractive. It is attraction that leads to a relationship. And women need to keep themselves up by going to the spa, keeping your hair done, making sure your nails are done. It shows you care about your appearance, and will care about your mate and children. Melonie: So since we're in the topic of being sexy, so how you feeling these days? So is there a significant other? Michelle: I feel great! Really, I do. I am confident and I am ready for more blessings. Melonie: It seems as though your faith carries you through, tell me more about that? Michelle: I am so glad that I was raised in the church. My mother and family taught me to have faith and God and to never to discourage despite circumstances. I have a great career, singing, being on Broadway, on actin (television)...and with all my success, I have been criticized or have MY relationship with God questioned (last time I checked my relationship with God was personal...between me and him...LOL). That's why I do not have faith in man because they will let you down every time. Without God's favor and my faith in Him, I will not be where I am today...It is what carries me through. Melonie: Recently we heard that you decided to take a new direction with your career tell us about that, what prompted the change? Michelle: We worked together for 10 years and that is a long time. It was just time for a change. Melonie: So what have you been doing professionally since your last release "unexpected"? Michelle: I have been really reflecting on my life and writing about it. I have been in the studio with my brother, Erron Williams. I am doing 8 shows a week so I am being careful with my voice. Near the end of Broadway, I will have a lot of material to lay down. LOL Melonie: How is Broadway different? How would you describe your personal experience? Michelle: Different from my musical career?...It is like an 8 to 5 job. I know when I have to be there and I know what time I leave. That is the biggest difference. Also, Broadway is not forgiving. If I miss a line it can throw off the entire scene. And I have to keep going and recover from the mistake. When singing on stage, it requires audience participation unlike being on the Broadway stage. Melonie: When can we expect another project from you? Michelle: The way things are going now, the spring of 2011...I do not know...I am really taking my time because I want it to be right...and promoted right...you know, everything that goes into a project. Melonie: You've also decided to take on being an entrepreneur, is that something you've always have wanted to branch out and do? Michelle: Yes, I am a minority owner of the WNBA team Chicago Sky. I am working on a bath and body line and some other business ventures. Plus, I want to give back to my community and what better way to do that is to provide jobs. I am excited about all God has for me to do. Melonie: You've had the privilege of being multi-talented. Your last gospel album did great, how do feel about that industry? Michelle: I have two gospel projects that were successful. I love the gospel industry and I have a few more gospel albums in me. I am very happy to see more gospel music crossing over to mainstream-beyond the four walls. This is what it is suppose to be, right? LOL! Melonie: If there is one advice or ideal that you've learned working in pop or R&B, that you would lend to the gospel industry what would that be? (I say this because sometime gospel music tends to be light years away from the R&B/pop stage) Michelle: Collaborations across genres. Mainstream artists respect all types of music and they work with other artists to create new sounds and ideals. This is what makes them grow and stay innovative. It would be great to see more gospel artists and producers work with Christian artists and producers, Country artists, Blue Grass, Pop and R&B. They all evolved from gospel anyway so why not! LOL Melonie: What gospel single is in your ipod right now? Michelle: The God in Me by Mary Mary. It really speaks to me. Melonie: Take us through any given Sunday for Michelle Williams? Michelle: Right now, I have two shows on Sundays. LOL. When I am not working I am in church surrounded by my family and friends enjoying the word. After church, we stand around and talk for at least two hours then we go eat at Cracker Barrel or someone's house!
