Crazy In Love (2003)
A dancefloor-destroying howitzer of a pop song
Beyonce’s finest single was released in 2003 to universal acclaim, shooting
to the top spot in America and the UK and picking up two Grammy Awards along
the way. Built around a horn sample from ' 1970 hit ‘Are You My Woman? (Tell
Me So)’ and featuring a rap from boyfriend Jay-Z (reportedly thrown out off
the cuff in 10 minutes at a 3am studio session), it remains a classic. If you
can judge a song by the amount of times it’s been covered, this track has
had the treatment from numerous artists, from Snow Patrol to Switchfoot and
The Magic Numbers. TC
5 Facts About 'Crazy In Love', our Track Of The Decade
* Beyonce Knowles co-wrote the track with her boyfriend (now husband) Jay-Z
and producer Rich Harrison, who had written the bare bones of the song a few
months prior to recording.
* The chorus hook was inspired by Beyonce fretting about her appearance in
the studio. She kept saying, "I'm looking crazy right now" – which Harrison
then repeated back to her.
* 'Crazy In Love' was included on Beyonce's debut solo album 'Dangerously In
Love' and released in July 2003 as the album's lead single.
* It was recorded in late 2002 at Sony Music Studios in New York.
* In 2004, Knowles received three Grammy Awards nominations for 'Crazy In
Love' in the categories of Record Of The Year, Best R&B Song, and Best
Rap/Sung Collaboration. The song won the last two, but lost out in the Record
Of The Year category to Coldplay's 'Clocks'.
