A copper-bottomed stinker this may be, but it's the type of banker that label
executives salivate about as they hand over the last shreds of their souls in
exchange for a bumper Christmas bonus. There is not a note, a drum beat, a
lyric or a chord progression here that departs from the schlock formula; no
sense whatsoever of emotional engagement, of an ambition to make a record
that stretches its creators or surprises its listeners. Spreading all over
the album like a scabrid rash is one of R&B旧 least lovely inventions, the
lifeless bass drum followed by the machine-made rim-shot and hand-clap. The
Boys sound no less plasticised. Is anyone else involved in this travesty
genuinely proud to put their name to it?
