Taiwanese duo katncandix2 have come a long way from the days when they used
to busk on the streets of Taipei. On Aug 30, the duo, made up of
singer-songwriter Chuang Chuan-ying and composer-producer Shen Sheng-je, will
share the stage with fellow Taiwanese musicians Peggy Hsu and Crowd Lu at
Under The Stars 2011, Singapore’s first Mandarin singer-songwriter festival.
Other performers at the event at The Coliseum at the Hard Rock Hotel
Singapore include Taiwan’s Lala Hsu and Hong Kong’s Hocc and Ellen Loo.
They will perform a range of genres such as indie rock and pop tunes to an
estimated crowd of 3,000 in a three hour-long concert.
As katncandix2 (pronounced cat-n-candix-two) do not often perform at such
large-scale concerts, Shen, 29, tells Life! in Mandarin over the telephone
from Taipei that he feels “a little nervous” to be performing at the
upcoming concert.
He and Chuang, 26, who is better known as Hsiao Chiu, also confess to being
a little starstruck at the prospect of appearing alongside the other artists.
Shen says that the duo will be bringing along their copies of those
artists’albums for them to sign.
Chuang adds: “It’s rare for us to meet them when we are performing, so
we're very happy to be going to Singapore for this concert.”
In spite of having two full-length albums under their belt – Little Flight
(2009) and Goodbye Prince (2010) – the duo are still getting used to their
fame, such as being recognised on the streets.
Chuang says: “We are so not used to it, perhaps it has something to do
with our characters?
“We were recently recognised in Taiwan and I was so shocked.
“I asked the fan, ‘Are you sure you know who we are?’ and I thought they
got the wrong person.”
The duo met at a singing competition and started busking in 2007 as
katncandix2.
The name is a play on the term cotton candy, which is the translation of
the Chinese version of their name, Mian Hua Tang.
They sold their first self-produced EP, 2375, in 2008 on the streets while
busking, and after that through the Internet, Chuang says.
It was so well-received that the duo, whose songs are often about dreams
and inspiration, were signed on by Taiwanese label AsiaMuse Entertainment in
2009.
