Valen Hsu puts a sick spin for her new album. Each track is produced masterfully and fittingly. This album is definitely a prize piece, and one that will be enjoyed by jazz fans. Light piano chords, wind instruments, and lush guitars create a groovy-jazz feel. The mood is to her advantage especially in Track 2 where her English accent is not exactly spectacular, allowing her to slip by also in Track 5. She does not flow to the mainstream of British pop, R&B, and pop rock. Her vocal is sweet and soft like Faye Wong, but her lack of strength on some notes still exposes her need to improve her singing technique. Nevertheless, what's still impressive about her singing is her ability to go so high and hit hard-to- follow notes as in Track 3. Another great thing is that she does not attempt to reach out of her comfort zone as a singer, singing in the genre she is most accustomed to. Her performance is great and difficult that I'm sure many artists would have trouble with. Because she sings along with a piano and so many different notes, there isn't much room for error, even if the sound editing fixes it, a wrong note can still stick out like a sore thumb. Aside from her bits and pieces of poetry and lyric-writing, she composed two main melodies in the album with one of them being the best. This is admirable, implying her strong involvement and strength in mastering her style and sound of music. Her signature sound becomes familiar as you hear the "tap tap tap" on the closed high-hat and the sliding back and forth of the bass accompanied by piano runs through different scales. Jesse's Journey into Selected Tracks: Track 1 is the best simply because of the unique melody that just catches you at the first listen. The introduction sets a murky, mysterious cloud over the song, and her vocal finishes it out; it mixes elevator with jazz. Her sudden minors after pauses in verses and in the chorus is an effective method to move the song out of pop, a risky move that many times can affect the song's success in the public. Track 7 is a beautiful melody that combines her style of jazz piano with soft ballad accentuated by the live drums. Definitely a hook that will stir your soul at a quiet sitting and will not irritate you. Typical of most love songs, the melody drops during the chorus, but that is so appropriate because the buildup from the prechorus must be met by catchy pop otherwise it would seem out of place and throw off the entire song. Great song in production, vocals, arrangements, and melody. Track 8 shows again the great music writing by Valen. She comes up with a very interesting chorus that will either spook you or cause you to imagine a love song playing in a mobster movie like The Godfather and such. Playing like a music box, the song is bound to evoke melancholic emotions. Track 11 has a great light melody that will take a couple of listens for you to catch on. The background vocals and snaps on the snare rim enliven the happy song. The bass is also very groovy; it plays call back with the acoustic guitar that rings, sort of like a big brother playing hide-and-seek with his little brother. Jesse's Junction: You get a 1950's Marilyn Monroe plus modern jazz feeling from this album. Don't worry, it won't bore you; the gracious piano will keep your spirits up. There is so much you can do while listening to it on a speaker; you can clean your room, read a book, drive along beautiful scenic roads, and spend time with your significant other. Best Song: Track 12 (prefer jazz) Best Vocal: Track 3 (unusual notes), Track 7 (streaming sound) Best Production: Tracks 1, 7 Radio-worthy: Tracks 1, 2, 7, 10 (good beat but tempo is too slow), 11, 12 Jesse's Advice: Should you do what makes you happy; this might help.
