Singer Tanya Chua on her music August 17, 2000 Posted at: 8 p.m. EDT (CNN) -- Tanya Chua is a popular singing artist from Singapore who has been described as a combination of Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette and Joni Mitchell. Her first album, "Bored," became one of Singapore's fastest-selling albums in 1997. Her newest release to hit the stores is "Remember." Active in the local scene, the 26-year-old Chua hosts a weekly program in which singer-songwriters talk about their love of music. She is the subject of numerous Web pages across the Net. Chat Moderator: Welcome, Tanya Chua! Tanya Chua: Hi everyone! Comment from Cenn-Singapore: Hello, Tanya! You were great! Tanya Chua: Thanks. Question from Lai: What or who encouraged you to sing? Tanya Chua: I love writing songs and singing my songs. Question from Singaporean: Tanya, do you still visit St. Nicholas Girls' School (SNGS)? Tanya Chua: Not really, unfortunately. Question from Singaporean: Tanya, is the Singaporean music scene really so barren that you have to go to the States and Taiwan to get your albums produced? Tanya Chua: I don't see Singapore's music scene as being barren. In fact, we have a lot of good musicians in Singapore, and I've worked with many in Singapore. Question from Cenn-Singapore: Tanya, do you see concrete development of Singapore's music scene in the foreseeable future? Tanya Chua: Definitely. But it's just a pity, because our population's kind of limited and we are still in our infancy. Question from Hi: Who are the people in your company who help your career path and how do they help? Tanya Chua: There are too many people who have contributed to make me what I am. Very important would be my management company. They helped me realize my dream of releasing my first English album in Singapore. Question from RadioFlyr: Why do Asian artists seem to have more difficulty reaching mainstream industries than do European artists? Tanya Chua: That's a weird question. We have many Asian artists in the commercial market! Question from Hkgan Malaysia: Tanya, what is your ultimate goal in your music career? Tanya Chua: It would be to have music heard all over the world. Question from Mafia-Boy: Tanya, who is your favorite musician? Tanya Chua: Joni Mitchell. Question from Hi: Tanya, will you consider hitting into the Western market like Coco Lee? Tanya Chua: I have dreams of having my music heard in the Western market. Question from Hkgan Malaysia: Tanya, how do you intend to achieve your goal? Tanya Chua: I will just continue writing music that I love and cross my fingers that it'll turn out well. Chat Moderator: Do you have any final thoughts for us? Tanya Chua: Thank you all for chatting with me. I really hope that Asian artists will have a place, not just in their own country, but also all over the world! To all Singaporeans, keep it up! Chat Moderator: Thank you, Tanya Chua, for joining us today! Tanya Chua: Thanks guys! Buy my albums! Tanya Chua joined Q&A Chat from Hong Kong. She typed for herself.
