Q:So,Robbie-sell-out stadium concerts,a song that everyone plays at their wedding. That was all supposed to happen to you, wasn't it? A:Yeah,I guess so. Q:At one point the insults were coming thick and fast. What was the most hurtful thing he said? A:I don't think there’s one thing,it's just how long it dragged on for ,and it become a reason for everyone else to slag me off.I mean,I don't take myself too seriously, but you think,”Just go away,”It was just so annoying by the end. Q:Do you remember when you were the most angry at something Robbie had said? A:The hardest time was at the point when it had stopped just being him doing all the nasty stuff and then everyone jumped on the bandwagon. He stopped because He didn't need to carry on any more.It was as if he'd shown everyone where I lived and said,”Go on,get on with it.” Q:You do call him a c*** at one point in the book.Your anger towards him must have been quite something…. A:I was angry for all the other people around, and when you know that something was being said for you, sort of ….benefit. Q:Did you ever try to contact him,to get him to stop? A:I tried to,about two years ago.It was comimg up to Christmas, and I thought,”I can't do another Christmas,I've got to speak to Robbie.” He'd just done something on Radio 1 and,as usual,he did his Gary Barlow bit.I tust thought,”I've got his assistant's number from Jason and rang and left a message, but I didn't hear back. Q:What would you have said to him? A:”Hello,”I guess, and see what he said back!It probably wouldn't been one of those bravado conversations where nothing's really said ,but.. Q:Would you have been able to stay calm during the call? A:I wouldn't have exploded into anger.Well, not at that point. Q:The bit at the end of the documentary where you're all waiting to see if Robbie turns up…Presumably you knew he was never going to turn up? A:We didn't actually, because the executive producer had said,”I spoke to Robbie this afternoon and he's coming.”He [the producer] lied to us!I was totally really for Robbie to turn up. Q:He's started being quite nice about you all on stage and in interview. Do you think it's because he realizes people like Take That again? A:My devious side would say that-but we all sat in a room earlier this year when we were in the middle of the tour and,in some kind of strange way,we're all like surrogate brother now. We're closer now than we were the first time and I could feel Robbie itching to be part of the whole Take That thing again. Q:What was it like to see him again after all those years?Did you hang back while everyone was hugging? A:No,I was straight in there. We just hugged each other. Q:Was it a genuine, warm hug? A:Yes,it was.We didn’t say anything and I looked around and there were about 30 girls with camcraphones and then we all went upstairs. The following night,he came again and hung around for about three hours. Q:What kind of things did you say? A:Mark went into this whole thing about his life after the band and getting depressed. And Robbie was very keen to know how had I felt after being dropped from my record label!I told it like it was. Q:Did you ask him questions? A:We all did…and he was really interested in the show.I think he was genuinely quite shocked at the scale of the tour. Q:There was no attempt by you to challenge him, question him about all those insults he'd thrown at you? A:No,it wasn't the time.I don't feel the need to do that now.And I guess, looking at the bigger picture,it needed to happen, that stuff, to get to where I am now.Had I carried on being the person I was before,I probaaly wouldn't have got married or had kids, and I've got that. Now I've got everything ,I can walk around proud again-for the last ten years,I couldn't do that. Q:Robbie's just cancelled the Asian leg of his tour and the single's done badly. It could all be going wrong for him.Would that please you? A:Well,he's hurt me more than anyone else has.But as an adult and a father…I'd hate to see him go through what I've been, because I don't know if he’d come through the other end.On a musical level, I know how much it keeps him together, doing this and being successful. And that's the irony-as Robbie experiences problems with his new album [two tracks may have to be pulled for legal reasons] and faces up to anoher bout of depression,Gary and Take That are on a high. The day a fter our interview, the band fly out LA to do the final mixes on new single Patience and the new album (due at the beginning of November). Gary says it's the best thing they've ever done. And no amount of negative words can dent that positive spirit.
