[新聞] 專題報道-Band For All Seasons

Band for all seasons
A Taiwanese band are winning fans with albums which include a series inspired
by Vivaldi, writes YP intern Page Leung
Holding up light boards to profess their undying devotion and waving glow
sticks from side to side, 3,000 screaming fans gave Taiwnese indie band
Sodagreen an ecstatic welcome to Hong Kong just over a week ago.
Sodagreen comprises vocalist Greeny Wu Qing-feng, acoustic guitarist A-Fu Ho
Ching-yang, electric guitarist Kay Liu Chia-kai, bassist Claire Hsieh
Hsing-i, percussionist Wei Shih Chun-wei, and Zephyr Kung Yu-chi on keyboard
and viola.
The band released their self-titled debut album in 2005 after meeting
producer Will Lin at Taiwan’s Hohaiyan Rock Festival in 2004.
Since then the band have built up a devout following in Asia; and with the
songs Little Love Song and Incomparable Beauty, they’re making a name for
themselves worldwide.
In 2007 and 2008, they won Taiwan Golden Melody Awards for Best Band.
Sodagreen’s style of music is hard to define because their songs range
widely from light folk to pop-rock.
Inspired by composer Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, the band started
Project Vivaldi in 2009 with the goal of releasing four albums within two
years.
Each album represents a season; the band has so far released two: Daylight of
Spring and Summer/Fever.
Spring was recorded in eastern Taiwan while Summer was put together in
London, the places the band thought the two seasons embodied.
But the project has had to be postponed because Kung is doing compulsory
military service. But Sodagreen have not completely stopped performing, and
they were invited to represent Taiwan at British music festival Liverpool
Sound City in May.
Nearly all the songs they performed at the Hong Kong concert were remixed or
featured new arrangements, adding a new energy to their live show.
Sodagreen sang some of their biggest hits such as Frequency, Summer Summer,
and Near Future, as well as their latest songs Once in a Lifetime and the
Putonghua version of their Taiwanese-Hokkien tune No Sleep.
At the end of the concert, fans surprised Sodagreen by singing a version of
Believe, prompting band members to burst into tears.
Sodagreen’s seventh album, Once in a Lifetime, will be released later this
month. It features three new songs and some live recordings from their Taipei
Arena show last year.
The title track single is about respecting people who work hard in different
roles in society. With this song, Sodagreen also want to encourage people to
strive to achieve their dreams.
Sodagreen hope their music will leave a feeling of freshness afterwards like
the leftover taste of soda – hence the name Sodagreen.
Once Kung returns to the band, Sodagreen hope to continue working on Project
Vivaldi. They will head to Beijing and Berlin to record the autumn and winter
sections respectively.
