Renee: Um, and that was not a great day. That was not a great day. I just put the clothes in the dryer from the washing machine, and I didn急 have enough quarters to dry the clothes, so the clothes got put back in the bag wet, and strewn about the apartment until they dried. That was, uh, an interesting day. James: You were still pretty brand new to Hollywood. What was it like - playing love scenes with Tom Cruise? Renee: Surreal. Um, scarey, uh, a little self-conscious, room full of people, bright lights, half-naked. There was more to it than actually was in the film. James: Didn急 you debate with Cameron Crowe whether you would be naked or not? Renee: Yeah, we had that talk. There was always the looming issue of the Love Scene. Then the moment came, and the cameras set up, and the lights are set up, and we虐e going to go in and shoot the Love Scene. And both of us have, um, enormous respect for things that feel organic in film. Um, don急 like the贰nything that feels manipulated. And I felt, certainly, that there, there must be some way that we could do it elegantly, um, and get around it. And it became a profile thing, and they shot it right above, really closely, and it was beautiful and wonderful. James: Would you like to know what Cameron Crowe thought of you? Renee: Good God, yes! James: He said, "The reason we hired her is the very reason why it works on the screen. Her quirky good heart is just totally on display." (clip of Jerry Maguire). How did your family react to your new status in life? Renee: It was very strange for them. James: Why? Renee: Well, they虐e European, and so they didn急 grow up, um, around the same sort of fanaticism that we have about celebrity. It旧 weird for them, 'cause they don急 really understand it. James: How is it for you? Renee: Weird. James: Renee received richly-deserved critical praise for her performance in One True Thing. Meryl Streep played... Renee: She played my mother, who was terminally ill, and uh..just a fantastic experience. Fantastic. James: How much preparation do you do before you step in front of a camera? Renee: Whoo. Uh, there旧 a lot of homework. James: What do you do? Renee: Well, I ask questions about what旧 obvious, and what旧, what 旧 not obvious is what旧 more interesting to me. I wanna know about what might motivate a character, so there旧 a lot of literal research and understanding the background, and understanding, uh, how they might form the opinions that they have, that might make them behave the way they虐e behaving in the scene. I want to understand the scene in context with, you know, the story. What the purpose of the scene is. What are you trying to communicate, and the bigger picture, and with every word that you say. And what options do you have? Because you can change the course of a scene with one work, um, and how you choose to um, uh, communicate with your, your actor, your fellow actor in the scene. And I want to have already thought it out before I get there. I don急 want to stumble through and, uh, and figure it out as we虐e going, 螋uz there 旧 other things to stumble through and figure out. And that旧 when the magic happens. James: How do you conduct yourself on the set? Are you gregarious on the set? Are you private? Renee: Vince D欧nofrio, um, when we did The Whole Wide World绚 think he旧 a fantastic actor, and he taught me, um, a lesson that I歓l never forget, actually. He said, 続on急 you know how much easier it is to get there and stay there, than to start all over again every time you go to do the scene?? So, that stayed with me. He旧 so right. That you go to work, and you reach a certain level, um, in the scene, in terms of your concentration, and then maintain it. Stay there, because you can go so much further, than starting all over again, and wasting time getting back to that place. James: In January, 2001, Renee won the Best Actress in a Comedy Golden Globe Award for her performance in another very good movie, called Nurse Betty. What is Betty Sizemore旧 obsession? Renee: The Greg Kinnear character. James: The character appears where? Renee: On her favorite soap opera. James: It旧 a very tricky part. You know, to make people believe that you are actually convinced that this soap opera is real, right? Renee: Yeah, but if you believe that she does, it旧 not hard. You know, if you believe in her. James: How do you come to that point? Renee: I loved her. (clip of Nurse Betty). James: What was your experience at the Golden Globes when you won the Best Actress award for Nurse Betty? Renee: Which part? James: Didn急 you almost miss the award? Renee: Yeah, well, yes. I went to the bathroom because I was really uncomfortable. I had, um, I had just, uh, gone through, uh, a pretty public breakup, and this was the first time I had gone out since then. And you start walking down the carpet, and the people put the mics in front of your face, and they all ask about that thing until I was about that big when I got at the end of the carpet and went to sit at my seat. So I was about that big, and then I was in the bathroom talking with people, um, again, about this breakup, and I got even smaller. And so I thought, "you know, I 観 just going to go over there and, uh, and powder my nose or something girly to distract myself." And this girl came in yelling, "Renee! Renee!" And I thought, "my God, does she not know there旧 live television outside?" And , and my agent and Barry Diller, who I was sitting next to at the table, who had escorted me to the bathroom, said, "you need to -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 210.59.146.10
