James: I see. Renee: And I, and I learned a lot, a lot...as much in that club as I did in my classes that that club paid for, so... James: Really? Renee: Oh yeah. I learned so much. I learned about myself, um, in terms of my boundaries, and I became very aware of, um, the moral convictions that were important to me. I learned not to judge people. I learned that things aren急 black and white, and that the way I had defined 帯ood?in the past, needed renegotiating, because there were a lot of good people that I worked with that got up on that stage every night to feed their families. A lot of them were students who, you know, um, were ok with, I don急 know, with that element being part of their lives. James: Was it during that time that you began playing small parts in movies? You were trying to... Renee: Yeah, yeah. It was a pretty great life, actually. School in the day, um, work at night, uh, studying in between, 螋uz work started late. James: Is that when Reality Bites came into it, at that time? Renee: Yeah, it did, yeah. James: Eight Seconds? Renee: Yes. Before that was, uh, a USA Network, and that was my first real speaking job. James: Which one was that? Renee: It was called, uh, A Taste For Killing. And I was terrified, and I thought, 単y God, now what? Now I have to go and do it. And I have to go to that set tomorrow and pretend like I know what I観 doing.? And nothing has changed. I swear to God. Every time I go out, I have that same feeling, that now is the time I観 going to get caught and fired. Now 旧 the time they虐e going to figure out that I don急 know what I観 doing, that I観 not an actress, and that I観 faking it. Honestly. So anyway, it worked out ok. James: What was your first leading role? Renee: Texas Chainsaw Massacre. And it was great! James: Why was it great? Renee: It was great because I couldn急 believe it. I couldn急 believe it. Every actor in Texas was in this old house downtown in Austin, auditioning for this movie, just because it was not a day player, but it was an opportunity to be part of something for real for the first time. James: And you were in a state of high hysteria through most of that film. Renee: Oh yeah, completely. James: You had a very important role in Love and a .45. Renee: Yeah. James: Shake, Rattle and Rock. Renee: Yeah, that was my first job in Los Angeles. James: Yeah. Renee: By default. James: Why default? Renee: Well, I didn急 get the job. The actress, she broke her leg two days before they started filming. So they called. James: Now, The Whole Wide World is a surprising and touching film. In it, you play another leading role. How did that movie happen to you? Renee: I did Shake, Rattle and Rock, and then after that, I went away to Wilmington, North Carolina and did an ensemble film called Empire Records. And then I didn急 work again for about a year. I just kinda, um, read things and knew that they weren急 important to me, and that I didn 急 want to be part of something that wasn急. And my manager friend, that I started working with after Empire Records, he called me and he said, 戦 think that you should read this, because I think that it will be very important to you.? And, uh, it was. It旧 a story of a woman who was a schoolteacher in Louisiana, and she was a very progressive thinker, and she struck up a relationship with a very eccentric, artistic man, Robert E. Howard. And they had a situation of unrequited love, and that旧 what the story was about, and I felt that it very much parallelled my own life in a different time. James: In the music credits, who is Woofgang Zellweger? Renee: That旧 my dog. James: Where渇 you get a name like Woofgang? Renee: It旧 Woof, which is her nickname. Dylan is her name, Woof is her nickname, and Woofgang is the joke. James: Dorothy Boyd Maguire in Jerry Maguire was an important step forward for you. How did that happen? Renee: Uh yeah, that旧 interesting. I still would like to know. Um, again, it旧 uh, John Carrabino, my manager I work with. Um, he旧 a great man, and he believes, you know. And he just thought, for some reason, that I should be in a movie with Tom Cruise. And uh, and it didn急 seem to occur to anybody else, but it did to him. James: Did you have to audition for it? Renee: Yeah, I did. James: You挙e been very choosy about the parts that you挙e played. Renee: Yes, because you can be. James: Well, I understand, but you can be at your peril. How much did you have in the bank when you auditioned with Tom Cruise? Renee: Not enough to actually use the ATM machine on a Sunday. Well they moved it up from ten bucks to twenty bucks, and so I couldn急 get out the thirteen bucks that I had in there. Um, it旧 so sad. Isn急 that sad? James: No, it旧 not sad. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 210.59.146.10
