James: You went to Katy High School? Renee: Um hmm, yes, I was on the basketball team, I ran cross country and track. I was a cheerleader. James: Were you a tomboy? Renee: I guess you could say that, it旧 pretty safe to say. Yeah. Absolutely. James: Are you still a tomboy? Renee: Am I? Yeah, absolutely. James: You are? Renee: Yeah, that旧 where I get a lot of my joy, actually. Go outside and, and play, you know? James: What were your primary academic interests in school? Renee: The literature road, pretty early on. I enjoyed that. I enjoyed writing the essays for the essay contests and stuff like that. So I suppose that was it. And then, you know, I always looked forward to my drama classes. Loved those. James: What plays did you do in high school? Renee: (laughs) Badly? James: I didn急 say that? Renee: Oh, it旧 the truth though, I was awful. Um, I was in Bury the Dead, um, I did, uh, a small part in Playing for Time, and I was the White Rabbit. James: Houston is a cosmopolitan center. Did you spend much time there as a child? Renee: No. I didn急 have a car when I was in high school, so I was kind of dependent on my friends. My father took us into town to see The Nutcracker at Christmastime, but that was it. James: At Jones Hall? Renee: That旧 it. Yeah, every year, religiously, um... James: What about TV? Renee: We weren急 allowed to watch a lot of TV. We had very strict rules in the house. James: You feel like a Texan? Renee: Yeah. Oh definitely. There旧 something that旧 unique about the place, um, culturally, it旧 so diverse, um, the music of the place. There 旧 sort of a musicality to everything about Texan culture. And then there 旧 the geography of the land. It旧 so unique - big, big skies. It旧 very quiet in between the cities. You can look for miles and just, you know, see the horizon. James: Where did you go to college? Renee: I went to Texas, University of Texas in Austin. James: What made you choose that? Renee: Um, I wasn急 quite sure what I wanted to study at the time. I was thinking journalism was it. James: What did you major in? Renee: I got my BA in Literature. James: Do you still write? Renee: Yes. James: What do you write? Renee: Mmm, whatever comes to mind..just put it down. James: What旧 going to happen to all those things you虐e writing? Renee: I don急 know. Terrifies me. I pass away, they get passed around 贸t旧 going to be horrifying. James: You虐e talking about passing away? Renee: Oh well, you know, eventually, I観 expecting that that might happen, you know. James: What about drama at Texas? What渇 you do? Renee: Not much, actually. Not much. Um, I took one class. It, uh, just caught me. I just remembered how much I loved it. James: Is that when you decided, more or less... Renee: Yeah. I, I didn急 think, "oh I観 going to try and do this professionally". I just thought I would explore other arenas and see where it went. So I started to do thesis films, uh, for, you know, people who are studying filmmaking. James: Our students, many of them, work as they earn their masters degrees, as most college students or university students do these days. They虐e very interested in what our guests have done to support themselves. Uh, what旧 Sugar旧? Renee: It旧 a, uh, cabaret. It旧 a, it旧 a topless bar in Austin, Texas. Uh, they played lots of music, and my hours were quite excellent, and you歓l still have time to do your classes during the day. And my father, um, was let go from his company right before he was eligible for his pension. And they called, and they said, 庁h, Renee, something 旧 happened that旧 a little interesting, and you虐e going to have to, uh, take care of school or, um, come home.? So I thought, 聴ow, how about that?? And there weren急 enough hours in the day to work at The Limited to, um, to cover the cost of school. And I went down and I thought, 滞mmm, guess I could be ok in here.? And, uh, I, uh, cocktail-waitressed for about a hear and a half, two years there. Um, never took my clothes off and nobody touched me, and it was never a question for me about, you know, whether or not that was an option. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 210.59.146.10
