Renee as Janis a Blow to Melissa News that Renee Zellweger is now set to play Janis Joplin for Paramount once she wraps work on the sequel to "Bridget Jones' Diary" has to have come as a blow to Melissa Etheridge. Melissa was, just a few years ago, gunning so hard for the part of the blues-rock singer who died of a heroin overdose in 1970, she got members of Joplin's Big Brother and the Holding Company group together and did a gig with them in San Francisco, singing ala Joplin. Attendees told us it was a remarkable performance, that it was possible to believe the hard-partying, doomed '60s singer was back. Melissa aimed to make Janis her performance of a lifetime. Brittany Murphy was also a Joplin prospect -- but one that was a stretch to imagine. Zellweger, who relates to Joplin's Texas roots, seems determined to prove she's versatile enough to play anyone -- and she may well be. But how Renee expects to emulate Joplin's stunning whiskey- voiced song stylings most definitely remains to be seen. Remember, Renee was so uncertain of her singing ability that she passed on performing a "Chicago" number live on the Oscar show, although within the safety of multiple takes in the studio, she did well. In respect to their ages, it does make more sense for Zellweger to play the legendary figure. Renee is 34, Melissa 42 -- and Joplin was only 27 when she died. Renee is a born competitor, who loves nothing more than rising to a seemingly impossible challenge, especially when naysayers insist she can't do something. Expect her to turn in a more than credible Joplin performance -- perhaps even to snag that Oscar. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 210.85.195.65
