If health fears subside by November, Toronto could see a return
of Chicago diva Renee Zellweger co-starring with Russell Crowe
in yet another teaming of the Aussie star and A Beautiful Mind
director Ron Howard. Or so says Hollywood North, the glossy new
mag for the Canadian movie and TV industry that launched this
month with an aggressive young team of film production workers.
The project, which has been dubbed "Oscar bait" by industry
watchers, is to star Crowe as '30s boxing legend Jim Braddock.
It's a Miramax/Universal project, and Miramax was obviously
happy with what happened here on Chicago. "We have some pretty
good inside info. We stand by it," says publisher Mike Zembowski,
whose mag features both the official list of what's shooting
and a Production Rumours section whose crystal ball reaches as
far as the end of the year. The premiere issue is deep industry
stuff, with profiles of former Lions Gate president Jeff Sackman,
who's entered a production venture called ThinkFilm with Robert
Lantos, and Frantic Films, a Winnipeg-based FX firm making waves
in L.A. "Our focus is on people or films that stand out," says
Zembowski. Hollywood North is aimed at a potential readership of
60,000 filmworkers across Canada. "There are more and more people
in the industry coming out of school with no idea what to do next.
