REVIEW: Red Hot Chili Peppers Kick Off World Tour In Hong Kong
(Photo: Warner Music/Nathan Dann)
When the Red Hot Chili Peppers wrapped up their Stadium Arcadium tour, the
band decided to hit the pause button to take stock of where they were heading
and whether they should go there.
Long time guitarist, John Frusciante, quietly decided to move on and did so
with the love and blessing of his band mates. His replacement was already in
the band. Josh Klinghoffer had joined the Peppers for the Stadium tour,
backing up on guitar, keys and vocals. When Anthony Kiedis and Flea asked him
to join full time, he asked for some time to consider the implications and
then eventually said yes.
The result was the rebirth of the band and their 10th album, I’m With You,
which will be released at the end of the month.
Last night, the Red Hot Chili Peppers kicked off their world tour in Hong Kong
’s cavernous Asiaworld Arena, the only venue I’ve ever been to which
includes signs directing you to the Airport!
Concerts rarely sell out in Hong Kong. This one went in moments and the
15,000 strong crowd of 50% locals and 50% expat Aussies, Americans and
Englishmen lapped it up.
The band exploded onto the stage with Kiedis in a tuxedo and a blistering
take on "By the Way". The tux came off for "Charlie" followed by "Can’t
Stop", dedicated by the socially tuned Keidis to the Filipinos in the crowd.
The roar was deafening and stayed there for the rest of the set.
Any concerns about the introduction of the new guy, Josh Klinghoffer, were
put to rest early on as he pulled out all stops with his master’s display on
guitar and ownership of his side of the stage.
Flea, Kiedis and Chad Smith also hit the ground running flat chat with a set
made up of the band's best loved hits and a sprinkling of songs from their
soon to be released I'm With You.
The stage was simple, clean, open and uncomplicated which was a perfect match
for the band’s spacious take on their new music.
Classics like "Scar Tissue", "Otherside" and "Under The Bridge" saw the
rampant crowd take over vocal duties while the first release from I’m With
You, "The Adventures of Raindance Maggie", proved that it was already well
entrenched with the crowd on their feet and yelling out the vocals.
Flea prowled the stage with his trademark menace and crazy dance moves
especially throughout their manic take on "Sir Psycho Sexy".
A comparatively subdued Anthony Kiedis focused all his boundless energy on
delivering every song with new found passion while Chad Smith dominated the
back of the stage with his seemingly effortless powerhouse drumming from
start to thundering finish.
It was Chad who said “This is a new band. Same name, but it's a new band.
All of us who witnessed the start of their world tour last night in Hong Kong
totally agree - the Peppers we love taking us where they haven't been before.
Look out for their live world-wide broadcast of the new concert at the end of
the month. We hear that it will most likely run in selected cinemas in
Australia – details to follow.
Stay tuned also for the announcement of dates for their Australian tour due
to hit our stages early next year.
I’m With You is due for release August 27.
At the conclusion of the 2 hour set, Anthony Kiedis thanked the crowd with
the words, “If you’ve got something to say, let it be Peace.”
The roar from the sweat drenched crowd was deafening!
