Jarvis Cocker Backs Independent MusicLabels "more nimble"

Former Pulp solo star Jarvis Cocker has backed independent music to weather the
current financial storm. The past ten years have seen the marketplace for music
change dramatically. The growth of digital downloads has altered the way people
buy music, with internet piracy sending major labels into a downward spiral.
However the internet has also caused a growth in DIY labels. Tiny independent
imprints have emerged, capable of harnessing the web's power with their forward
thinking approach.
At a recent conference, Jarvis Cocker backed these new labels to survive the
current economic storm. Speaking at the Association Of Independent Label Music
the 6Music presenter claimed that small labels are more able to react to a changing
marketplace.
"We have got people talking about what they value in music," he said. "The more
established major radio stations and labels are flailing around, and let them.
Indies are more nimble and in much better position to react."
Continuing, Jarvis Cocker argued that the only reason bands would ever want to sign
to major labels is due to offering massive amounts of money. "It was rather nice
actually," he said. "But they haven't got any money left."
Meanwhile, the singer claimed that the fate of 6Music was not a foregone conclusion.
"Maybe they will try to stall in some way and they have already had such an
overwhelming reaction that it gives a clear message" he said. "It's a slightly dirty
trick – hoping people will forget."
The conference saw major players in independent music gather to talk about the current
market place. Simon Raymonde co-founded Bella Union, which recently enjoyed massive
success with Fleet Foxes.
"Fleet Foxes could have signed with anyone, but they wanted to sign with us not because
of the money – we couldn't begin to compete – but because they love having a small
team and we accept how they want to be portrayed."
