Psy Talks ‘Gangnam’ Success, Why He Can’t Take Off His Sunglasses
The Korean rapper Psy stopped by Rolling Stone recently to talk about the
success of his viral hit “Gangnam Style,” as well as his signature look.
As Psy has revealed before, he never expected that “Gangnam Style” would
achieve the success it has enjoyed. Intended merely for Korean pop fans, the
song was uploaded to YouTube and quickly caught viral with other musicians
and celebrities discovering and sharing the video (which, as of right now, is
sitting just under 600,000,000 views).
“I was not important, I was not famous,” he said to the magazine, via MSN.
“Some celebrities like Katy Perry and Britney Spears, they started to tweet
my video… CNN and ABC reported about me at the same time, and the LA Times,
the New York Times, Wall Street Journal — that all happened at the same time
in the same week. I don’t know why.”
Just as important as the song is the style, from the invisible horse dance to
the 50s’ Motown tux and sunglasses. In fact, Psy recalls, those sunglasses
are the reason Jon Bon Jovi recognized him recently in Las Vegas.
“He said, ‘Hey, let’s take a picture.’ We took a picture, and he uploaded
the picture to his Facebook and he said, ‘Guys, look who I’m with right now.
’ So I was like, ‘Wow, that’s Bon Jovi, and he recognized me, and he asked
me to take a picture. Wow. I’ve loved him since ‘You Give Love a Bad Name.’
”
And those sunglasses aren’t coming off. “I can’t take off [my] sunglasses
right now,” he says with a laugh.
