PSY Gangnam Style Still Goes Gangbusters On ARIA

A fifth week atop the ARIA Singles Chart for PSY’s “Gangnam Style”, and
another new sales certification in the process, making it five weeks at the
top and now five x Platinum. Plus “Gangnam Style” is now the third equal
longest running No.1 of the year, below is a list of the longest running
chart-toppers of 2012 (so far).
1|eight weeks – Whistle – Flo Rida
2|six weeks = Wild Ones – Flo Rida feat Sia
2|six weeks = Battle Scars – Guy Sebastian feat Lupe Fiasco
3|five weeks = Call Me Maybe – Carly Rae Jepsen
3|five weeks = Gangnam Style – PSY
Gavin Ryan reports that also holding on this week are Calvin Harris and
Florence Welch who debuted at No.2 last week with “Sweet Nothing”, which
unlike recent high debuts, stays put at No.2 waiting for its turn at the top
of the charts. Another act who are hoping to do that leaps into the Top 10 at
No.3 this week, Swedish House Mafia with “Don’t You Worry Child”, which is
up eight places from last week. And as I have previously mentioned, this has
been their biggest hit in Australia, and now it becomes their first Top 10
entry here, with their second album “Until Now” also landing within the
ARIA Top 15 Albums this week.
Guy Sebastian and Lupe Fiasco’s “Battle Scars” drops one place again this
week, down to No.4 now, whilst the next three tracks all move up two places
to new peaks. Delta Goodrem sees her first rise within the second week after
a high debut, as “Wish You Were Here” climbs up to No.5 (the last time this
happened for Delta was when “Predictable” climbed from its No.2 debut to
No.1 back in Dec of 2003, since then it’s been high debuts with falling
figures each successive week after). “Diamonds” by Rihanna breaks away from
its three weeks at No.8 by climbing to No.6, and after entering the Top 10
last week, Sam & The Womp are up to No.7 with their debut track “Bom Bom”.
“Hall of Fame” for The Script and Will.i.am falls three places to No.8, but
tumbling five spots to No.9 is Birdy with her three week running No.2 single
“Skinny Love”. The second and final Top 10 entrant for the week is the new
track for Bruno Mars “Locked Out of Heaven” which jumps up eleven places to
land at No.10. It now becomes his eighth Top 10 hit in Australia, his last
being as guest vocalist on the track “Young, Wild & Free” with Snoop Dogg
and Wiz Khalifa (HP-4×2, peaked Jan 2012)
NEW PEAKS & MOVERS: Reece Mastin’s “Rock Star” holds at No.16 for a second
week, so the next new peak is from Little Mix with their track “Wings”,
which flies up fourteen places to No.20 (They’re on X-Factor this coming
week, so watch this climb again next week). Right behind them at No.21 is
Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj with “Beauty and the Beat”, clawing up the
charts nineteen places, followed closely at No.23 by “Little Talks” by Of
Monsters and Men, up eight places this week.
Mumford and Sons are in the middle of their national tour (one more week to
go), which has helped “I Will Wait” to climb eight places to a new peak of
No.29 this week. Climbing back to her initial debut spot of No.36 is Nicki
Minaj with “Va Va Voom”, and Usher’s “Numb” jumps up eleven places to
No.39.
Three of last weeks lower fifty debutees jump up into the Top 50 this week,
firstly “Drink” by Lil’ Jon and LMFAO is up twenty-five places to No.42.
The remixed version (which is the one selling) features a sample of the 1991
house track “(I Wanna Give You) Devotion” by Nomad.
Fun crack the Top 50 with their new track “Carry On”, up nine spots to
No.44, and (almost) halving itself from last week is the new Jay Sean track “
So High”, which zooms up forty-eight places from its No.95 debut to No.47
this week.
DOWN DOWN: Two tracks leaving the Top 10 this week are P!nk with “Try”,
down five places to No.11 after four broken weeks inside the Top 10, two of
those at No.6. Taylor Swift’s new album is out now, so her high flying
multiple singles all take a tumble this week, with last weeks No.10 “I Knew
You Were Trouble” down seventeen places to No.27, and her former No.3 single
“We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” is down eleven spots to No.26.
She also leaves the Top 100 with “State of Grace” (HP-44, LW-44) and “Red”
(HP-30, LW-58).
After leaping into the Top 50 last week, Enrique’s new single “Finally
Found You” drops back thirteen places to No.46, but a bigger drop is for Kid
Cudi with “Just What I Am”, falling nineteen spots to No.51. And after one
week in the Top 10, two weeks inside the Top 50, Adele’s “Skyfall” drops
down seventeen places to No.58 this week.
X-FACTOR Live (Week 6): The two live international acts that performed on the
show this week both benefit with resurgences of their current hits. Cher Lloyd
’s “Want U Back” (HP-36) jumps back thirty-three places to No.41, and
Matchbox 20’s “She’s So Mean” (HP-26) climbs back up fifteen places to
No.37. Ne-Yo’s “Let Me Love You” was performed on the show by a
contestant, and it turns back around and climbs back up five spots to No.14.
The Collective debut at No.70 with their version of “Lego House”, with the
original for Ed Sheeran (HP-4) returning to the Top 100 at No.76. Other songs
covered on last weeks shows were “Shake it Out” (HP-36) for Florence + the
Machine, returning at No.90, and “Scream” (HP-11) by Usher is back in at
No.95, Usher also performing the song on the returning series for The Graham
Norton last Saturday.
NEW #40 – “Catch My Breath” by Kelly Clarkson
It’s been ten years since Kelly Clarkson won the first American Idol, and
next year it’ll be ten years since she first graced our charts with “Miss
Independent” (HP-3, peaked early October 2003). She lands the highest new
entry of the week at No.40 with “Catch My Breath” one of the new tracks on
her mid-November due “Greatest Hits – Chapter One” collection. This
becomes her seventeenth Top 100 entry in Australia, her most recent single
being “Dark Side” (HP-56, August 2012).
Lower 50: Maroon 5’s new single “Daylight” is up fifteen places to a new
peak of No.55, Conor Maynard and Ne-Yo climb again this week with “Turn
Around” up eleven spots to No.57, and Christina Aguilera with “Your Body”
climbs only four places to No.59. “Latch” by Disclosure holds at No.61 for
a second week, with the next new peak coming at No.78 for Hermitude, who
climb four spots to No.78 with “Hyperparadise”. Elen Levon jumps up fifteen
places to No.81 with “Dancing to the Same Song” and returning at No.85 is
Frank Ocean with “Lost”, a new height for the single.
Also coming back into the Top 100 this week are “Moves Like Jagger” (HP-2)
for Maroon 5 and Christina Aguilera at No.74, helped possibly by being used
in a new tablet ad (electronic tablet, not medicinal) Kid Cudi might have
dropped with his new track, but his previous single “Pursuit of Happiness”
is back in at No.91, and LMFAO return at No.98 and 100 with their two former
No.1 singles “Sexy and I Know it” and “Party Rock Anthem” respectively.
The follow-up to the No.3 single “Feel the Love” (TW-67) for Rudimental is
entitled “Not Giving in”, which debuts at No.54 to become their second
Australian chart entry, featuring guest vocals from John Newman (who was on
the last single) and Alex Clare. Their self-titled debut album is due for
release in February 2013.
There are four songs within the Top 100 for English singer/songwriter Ed
Sheeran. His former No.4 single “Lego House” returns at No.76 thanks to an
X-Factor performance of the song by The Collective (TW-70). “Drunk” (HP-9)
is down to No.87 this week, but two new entries land in the lower fifty for
him this week. Coming in at No.60 is the fifth track from the album “+”
(TW-19) to chart here in Australia, “Give Me Love”. He also debuts at
No.75 as a part of a duet with Taylor Swift entitled “Everything Has Changed
” from her new No.1 album “Red”.
Matchbox 20 started their new world tour here in Australia last week, plus
they played on Tuesday’s X-Factor show performing “She’s So Mean” (52 to
37 this week). The second single from their new album “North” (TW-10) is
entitled “Put Your Hands Up” which debuts at No.65 this week,
British alternative indie pop back Alt-J see their album “An Awesome Wave”
jump into the Top 50 this week for the first time, and now their first
single to chart comes in at No.93 entitled “Breezeblocks”.
Perth’s Karl Thomas is better known as the drum and bass act ShockOne, and
he sees his first ARIA Singles Chart entry this week, as his latest track “
Chaos Theory” debuts at No.96. with his new album “Universus” due out
early in 2013.
