Oasis 'fakes' to help the poor

MORE than 1,300 counterfeit Oasis T-shirts seized at the band's Heaton Park
gigs are to be donated to the world's needy.
Manchester trading standards officers seized the T-shirts from rogue traders
cashing in at the three huge concerts attended by 210,000 people at the
beginning of June. They are now being handed to charity.
The International Aid Trust will distribute the garments to needy people in
eastern Europe, Africa and India after removing Oasis logos from each one.
Some 654 posters also seized from illegal street traders during the gigs will
be pulped into new paper. The frames from 132 counterfeit pictures of Liam
and Noel Gallagher will be donated to charities for re-use.
Manchester trading standards officers have seized more than 56,000 counterfeit
items since a crackdown on rogue street sellers was launched in April.
Officers are recycling as many of the items as possible as part of a commitment
to be more environmentally friendly. Among the clothes handed to the Trust are
fake 'designer' garments and sports clothing.
CDs and DVDs featuring copied films and music will be wiped and re-used while
and bottles containing counterfeit vodka will also be sent to recycling plants.
Council spokesman Richard Cowell said: "I'm delighted that, not only have we
stopped these items being bought by Manchester consumers, we've also stopped
them ending up on landfill sites."
The Rev Bernard Cocker, director and founder of the International Aid Trust,
said: "It's wonderful we're working with the city council, as these items are
being turned into a force for good, giving hope to some of the world's
poorest people."
