Q: Give me a snapshot of the making of Definitely Maybe.
Not fun. Because we made it three times before we got what we wanted.
Hard graft. The realization also came that Tony [McCarrol] wasn’t good enough.
I’d already written most of…Morning Glory, I’d written that drum fill on
"Don’t Look Back In Anger" that goes into the last chorus. And it was like,
“He can’t even play in a straight line.”
"Don’t Look Back In Anger"
Q: And…Morning Glory?
If I’d thought then that 18 million people were going to buy that album,
I’d still be making it now. I look back and think, “What a privilege”.
It was a wonderfully romantic time. We could go to the village pub for a game
of pool, me and Bonehead.
Q: Do you miss all that?
I miss those first few years up until Knebworth. Not in the sense that I’d
like to relive them—I’ve done it once—but everything up to then was brand
new. After that, the phone call came to be all about sales figures. I know
what’s going to happen to me in the next five years, and it’s nothing
that’s not happened in the last five. Before Knebworth, every day was new.
I don’t even remember getting a hangover. I only have to look at a can of
Guinness now and I get a fucking headache. When I travel to Wembly in a convoy
of limousines in the summer, I’ll feel like a rock star. I didn’t then. \
I had butterflies all the time.
Wembly
Q: Any regrets?
America. We blew it. Our record company, on the day after Liam had a big
dribble of spit coming out of his mouth at the MTV awards, virtually said
goodbye to us. That was it. We’d sold four million albums there to that point,
more than in England. We could have been bigger than The Beatles there. See,
Liam ultimately thinks he’s unworthy of it, so he tries to destroy it.
Raging fucking insecurity. I’m not insecure, I’ll sell it. All he had to do
was stand at the back, wear sunglasses and shut the fuck up.

Well I've seen things
That scarred and bruised and left me blind
So come on, listen along with me
I think you need a little company
