Lesson 10 Two Amazing Singers
There have been many young and talented singers in Taiwan in
the last ten years, among them Chang Yu-sheng and A-Mei. Young
audiences today love to listen to their music. Their records
are found in most music stores.
Unfortunately, a driving accident took the young life of the
promising pop star Chang Yu-sheng. Chang is remembered most
for his big hit, "My Future Isn't a Dream." It became a theme
song for the young generation and was heard in record stores,
on almost all radio stations, and even in a television commercial.
After completing his military service, Chang returned to his
music career. Like other singers, Chang was always looking for
new ideas to bring to pop music. He was the first to use aboriginal
Taiwanese melodies in pop songs. Many people at that time thought
that was very unusual, but the idea proved to be popular.
Chang Yu-sheng also brought us A-Mei, a slim and attractive woman
from an aboriginal tribe in Taiwan. He helped her record two albums
before the car accident. The first album, Sisters, was a big hit.
The second album, Bad Boy, was also very popular. A-Mei's voice has
attracted great public attention. She has been compared to the
American superstar, Whitney Houston. In fact, A-Mei is becoming an
international star. Her fans greatly enjoyed her first concert in
Hong Kong. Maybe a new nickname for her should be "A-mei-zing"!（注一）
Sadly, we can no longer hear Chang Yu-sheng sing in person. But we
can still enjoy the music of the star he "discovered," A-Mei.
注一：A-mei-zing 為作者自創之詞，尚未被普遍接受的正規字，所以用斜體
字標出，因 A-mei-zing 與 Amaze 音相似。其他類似字如：brunch
（breakfast + lunch）通常指「早午餐」已被接受，而 Chinglish
（Chinese + English ）則指「中式英文」，尚未被普遍接受。

張雨生服完兵役後，又回到音樂的本行。和其他的歌手一般，張雨生不斷追尋
新觀念，並將它們帶入流行音樂裡。他是第一位將臺灣原住民曲調放進流行歌曲裡
的人。當時許多人認為這非比尋常，但這個想法最後證明極受歡迎。
張雨生也給我們帶來了阿妹（張惠妹），一位苗條、動人的原住民小姐。張雨
生在車禍前幫她錄製了兩張專輯。第一張專輯「姊妹」紅極一時。第二張專輯「壞
男孩」，也是廣受歡迎。阿妹嘹亮的歌喉吸引了大家的注意。她曾經被喻為美國的
超級巨星—惠妮‧休斯頓。事實上，阿妹正逐漸邁入國際巨星之列，她的歌迷非常
喜愛她在香港的第一次演唱會。也許應該給她取個新的綽號叫「驚奇」。
令人傷感的是，我們無法再聽到張雨生親自獻唱。但我們仍然能歡愉地聽到他
所發掘的歌星阿妹的歌聲。
