The days without any cigarettes

the road could never reach the dawn,

along the streets of the small grey town.
Perhaps you don’t much like it, then:
no blue doves to soar and wheel!
No cigarettes? Cut some firewood.
Smoke to your utter hopelessness!
Smoke to the light rain, scatter-sown;
it will never come again!

Once again, days without smoke.
