Ashanti sells another 246,000 copies, marking a second-week drop of 51%.
Celine Dion posted a similar drop (53%) last week but only a 14% erosion
this week, a result of her CBS concert special.
The Goo Goo Dolls' "Gutterflower" sells 101,300 for a #4 entrance, the
group's first top 10 album. Their single "Here Is Gone" is #20* on the
Hot 100. Even though the Dolls have been around since 1989, they are
like newbies compared to the two artists with the next highest entries.
Neil Young's "Are You Passionate?" fires up the #10 spot with 56,300.
This is Young's 34th album and 7th top 10 in his solo career, and his
highest chart position and sales week since his 1995 collaboration with
Pearl Jam ("Mirror Ball"). At #13 with 54,300, Bonnie Raitt's "Silver
Lining" is her highest-charting set other than her three top-two albums,
the latest of which was in 1994.
It's common for an album to soar after a TV appearance by the artist;
but what happens to Josh Groban in this issue is a stunner. After being
profiled on ABC's 20/20, the young vocalist's debut album polevaults
#121->#12* as sales rocket from below 10,000 to around 56,000. Nevermind
that only two days remained in the tracking week when the program aired.
Among all single-artist albums in the SoundScan era, excluding cases of
street-date violations and staggered shipping schedules, Groban's 466%
increase is the largest ever, and his 109-position chart leap is the
second-largest. Enigma's first album climbed #169->#47 in March 1991,
soon after SoundScan started tracking sales. In comparison, Aaliyah's
last album registered a 392% sales jump following her death last year.
TV exposure lifted Groban up the chart several times earlier this year,
but only to as high as #41.

Just when Irving Lorenzo/Irv Gotti is becoming to 2002 what Puff Daddy
was to 1997, the man formerly known as Sean Combs is back in the top 10
under the moniker P. Diddy. "I Need A Girl (Part One)," featuring Usher
& Loon, hops #11->#6* with the largest airplay gain on the chart. This
is his 10th top 10 entry and his first since November 1999. He is also
featured on Busta Rhymes's "Pass The Courvoisier Part II," now at #16*.
The Singles Sales chart tells another sad story that screams "remember
the days..." The Calling's "Wherever You Go," a slow-climbing airplay
hit that peaked at #5 just five weeks ago, enters Singles Sales at #13
with a mere 2,500 copies. In July 2000, Vertical Horizon's "Everything
You Want" sold 29,500 copies out of the gate shortly after peaking at a
similar airplay level. Aside from the overall evaporation of the singles
market, "Wherever's" $4.49 list price may have also deterred buyers.
--------------------------------------------
A "*" (bullet) beside a chart position marks that a single or album
registered a notable gain in sales or airplay or chart points. Debut
titles automatically carry bullets. Video charts and Top Internet Album
Sales do not award bullets.
