U.S. Charts 01/26/2002
2002 rolls on with a slow start, posting lower sales than 2001 in the
first two calendar weeks. 11.3 million albums are sold this week, a drop
of 17% from last week.

As sales tumble by 42%, "GHV2" fails to hold its ground in the new year.
SoundScan total stands at 966,568 and should pass the 1 million mark in
two weeks. The album will most definitely not scan another million by
year's end, but a second platinum certificate is possible.

"Drowned" was anything but during the holiday season, persisting in the
top 10 for eight weeks. "Ray Of Light," "The Video Collection 93:99,"
"Music" and "What It Feels Like For A Girl" spent 4, 2, 4 and 6 weeks in
the Music Video top 10, respectively, and "93:99" was the only one that
stayed for a long time on the chart.

Is Madonna getting bigger, or just the chart getting smaller? Not even
four months ago, "What It Feels Like" dropped off Hot 100 Singles Sales
when it sold 745 copies. And now, "Don't Tell Me" needs only 656 copies
to take up #54, while the #75 title moves a mere 508 copies.

Hot 100
-------
You may think this day will never come, but it's here. Overall singles
sales drop below 300,000 units this week. It's not even 290,000, or even
280,000. It's 271,000 - roughly the number Mariah Carey's "Heartbreaker"
single did in its first week, BY ITSELF, a little over two years ago.
Even just one year ago, as much as the singles market had shrunk by
then, the tally was 602,000. We are probably seeing the lowest singles
sales EVER, since the inception of the format in the 1940s.
Well, forget about sales or airplay. Why don't we just take a look at
the Hot 100 from top to bottom, and see what's interesting.
After Usher and Nickelback we have "Always On Time" by Ja Rule featuring
Ashanti, which jumps #5->#3*. Already dominating the R&B/Hip-Hop chart,
"Always" moves into the top 10 on Top 40 Tracks, displacing none other
than Ja Rule's own "Livin' It Up."
Four 14-week-old entries are competing in the top 10. At #4, Pink loses
bullet after eight weeks in the top 10. Creed and Shakira keep up their
momentum at #5* and #7*. Enjoying a late acceleration, Alicia Keys's "A
Woman's Worth" is now #8*.
At #10 is "Hero," the reigning Adult Contemporary #1, milking its 14th
week in the top 10. It is sandwiched by two rock songs. The Calling's
"Wherever You Will Go," also known as the "Kate & Leopold" trailer song,
jumps to #9* in its 12th week while continuing to top the Adult Top 40
monitor. (The band's gold album "Camino Palmero" climbs 15 rungs this
week to a new peak of 44*.) Linkin Park's "In The End" inches up to #11*
in its 13th week even though it loses the crown on Modern Rock Tracks.
Five For Fighting's "Superman (It's Not Easy)" was not as lucky. It made
an arduous climb, taking a record-setting 28 weeks to reach #1 on Adult
Top 40. Yet in the end, it could fly no higher than #14 on the Hot 100.
#14 was also where Aaliyah's "Rock The Boat" reached its highest point;
and it is where Michael Jackson's "Butterflies" perches right now with a
bullet. "Butterflies" moves up to #2* on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart, but is
still nowhere to be found on Top 40 Tracks.
The youngest entry in the top 15 is No Doubt's "Hey Baby," #12* in its
8th week. An even bigger threat, however, comes in the form of a tried-
and-true combo, Jennifer Lopez and Ja Rule. It is the Greatest Gainer/
Airplay with 18 million audience increase, and zips #39->#16* in only
its 5th week. Just like "I'm Real," the "remix" of "Ain't It Funny" is
entirely different from the original; it is currently contributing to
80% of the title's total airplay. The two versions should be tracked
separately under the new chart rule, but they are combined anyway since
they were released before the end of 2001. In any case, with "Livin' It
Up" lingering at #17, Ja Rule has three entries in the top 20 - for the
second time in less than two months. Indeed he has four entries in the
top 40, as "I'm Real" is sitting at #39.
If you count "Ain't It Funny" as a single off "J.Lo," then it is the
fourth top 20 hit from that album. That is a rare feat these days, when
most albums can't even sustain a third single.
Not to imply any musical similarity, but U.K. R&B sensation Craig David
is on a path previous followed by O-Town: His first single "Fill Me In"
was a sales hit but failed to attract airplay, while his second single
"7 Days" is heating up the airwave, reaching #20* on the Hot 100 after
eight weeks. That's pretty good. Just ask Jewel: "Standing Still" has
only made it to #27* after 11 weeks.
Hot Shot Debut is "What About Us?" at #42*, Brandy's first Hot 100
appearance in over two years. That may seem long, until we look at the
second-highest new entry this week. '80s flashback warning!! It's an
Aussie chick named Kylie Minogue. After scoring three top 40 hits in the
late '80s, including the #3 remake "The Loco-Motion," Kylie was absent
from the U.S. music scene for nearly 13 years, even as she enjoyed
continuing success overseas. Now she's back with "Can't Get You Out Of
My Head" - An international smash from 2001, it debuts on this week's
Hot 100 at #64. Who knows, it might just follow the footsteps of Cher's
comeback hit "Believe," which became Billboard's #1 single of 1999 after
conquering Europe the year prior.
"Hangin' By A Moment" needs just a moment longer - one more week - to
make it a full year on the Hot 100. Other hopefuls for an anniversary
celebration include "Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)," #41 in its 46th week,
and "It's Been A While," #38 in its 42nd week. One reason for this good
news, something that doesn't bode so well for these rock bands' future,
is that their follow-up singles have so far failed to make an impact on
the Hot 100.
Billboard 200
-------------
Creed spends its eighth straight week at #1, the only album to do so
since 'NSync and Eminem in the spring/summer of 2000. The last album to
do better was the "Titanic" soundtrack with a 16-week streak in early
1998. If we include non-consecutive runs, Backstreet Boys' "Millennium"
accumulated a total of 10 weeks in 2000.
The American Music Awards makes some waves in this issue. Most notable
is the Greatest Gainer, Yolanda Adams, who performed at the show and won
the inaugural Contemporary Inspirational Music award. Her album soars
#80->#46* on a 4,000-unit gain. Brooks & Dunn registers the largest
percentage increase among AMA beneficiaries, a 23.5% upswing that pushes
them #157->#105*. Performer Shaggy leaps 196->#143* on an 18% increase.
Two-time winner Tim McGraw jumps #105->#72*. Luther Vandross, a winner
who also performed George Harrison tributes, re-enters at #188*. Double
winner Alicia Keys jumps #13->#8* despite a 5% decline. Aaliyah, who won
over Keys in two categories, drops #56->#61. For special honoree Michael
Jackson, whose CBS concert special was re-aired on the same night, it's
a mixed bag. "History" posts a 51% growth and re-enters at #115*, but
"Invincible" shifts #27->#24 on a 17% drop. Britney Spears's performance
couldn't stop her album from sliding #14->#20; 'NSync's "Celebrity"
continues a downward spiral that brought it from #25 to #56 in three
weeks, despite an AMA win and the recent premiere of their new video.
But the night's biggest loser might be P. Diddy, whose co-host gig seems
to have turned people away. His latest album, already off the top 200,
posts a sales decrease of 64%, compared to 49% the week before.
There are also some delayed responses to the Grammy nominations. The
unbelievable "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack moves up five spots
to #13*, and U2 jumps 19 positions to #39*.
The only debut in the top 100 is "I Am Sam" soundtrack at #25*, which is
in fact an album of Beatles covers. Rock group Hoobastank is on their
way to something big: Their debut album jumps #72->#37* this week on a
17% sales increase.
