The unpublished 01/05 charts tracked the pre-Christmas week, when 40.7 million albums were sold. This issue reflects the week of 12/24-12/30, when overall album sales drop back by 39% to 24.8 million. GHV2 (Platinum) --------------- | TW LW WO PK(#) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Billboard 200 | 29 27 7 7 | Top Internet Album Sales | 16 17 7 10 | -----------------------------|----------------------------| "GHV2" was bulleted last week, like most titles in the top 50. Sales drop by 47% this week, higher than the overall market decline but lower than the 60%-or-so drop seen by the likes of Britney, Garth and 'NSync. This is consistent with "Music's" behavior one year ago. Here is a summary of GHV2's weekly sales. The bullet situation for the past a few weeks was largely affected by the holiday sales surge. ISSUE RANK SALES SUBTOTAL ---------------------------------- 12/01 7* 150,300# 150,300# 12/08 13 164,000# 314,300# 12/15 23 90,268# 404,568 12/22 28 98,334 502,902 12/29 30* 116,278 619,180 01/05 27* 181,789 800,969 01/12 29 96,221 897,190 ---------------------------------- #: approximate Madonna's last retrospective album, "Something To Remember," held in the mid-teen positions around Christmas 1995. However, since overall record sales were lower then, that album's holiday sales numbers were similar to "GHV2's," nearing but not passing 200,000 for the pre-Christmas week. Drowned World Tour 2001 (DVD/VHS) --------------------------------- | TW LW WO PK(#) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Top Music Video | 7 6 7 1 | -----------------------------|----------------------------| GHV2 Megamix (Promo) -------------------- | TW LW WO PK(#) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Hot Dance/Club Play | 28* 38 3 28 | -----------------------------|----------------------------| VH-1 Monitor | -- ? 4+ 11 | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Impressive Instant (Promo) -------------------------- | TW LW WO PK(#) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Hot Dance/Club Play | 48 31 12 1(2) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Note that the Club Play chart was "frozen" for the week of 01/05, meaning the chart remained unchanged from the 12/29 issue. Madonna does appear on the VH-1 Monitor, but with an unlikely entry: "Lucky Star" at #34. What It Feels Like For A Girl (D)(M)(T)<> ------------------------------------------ | TW LW WO PK(#) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Hot 100 Singles Sales | 49* 70 32 9 | Hot Dance/Maxi-Singles Sales | 5* 8 36 1 | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Don't Tell Me (C)(M)(T)(V)(X)<> (Gold) -------------------------------------- | TW LW WO PK(#) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Hot 100 Singles Sales | 48* 72 39 1 | Hot Dance/Maxi-Singles Sales | 17* 20 40 1(5) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Music (Single) (C)(D)(T)(V)(M)(X)<> (Platinum) ----------------------------------------------- | TW LW WO PK(#) | -----------------------------|----------------------------| Hot Dance/Maxi-Singles Sales | 11 13 72 1(11)| -----------------------------|----------------------------| In the post-holiday slump where overall singles sales tumble by 24%, two Madonna singles swim against the tide and post impressive increases - "Girl" up from 1,246 to 1,301 copies, and "Don't Tell Me" from 1,254 to 1,289. "Music" is down from 1,017 to 910, but shuffles up in the rank #85->#78 (outside the 75-position Hot 100 Singles Sales). The Immaculate Collection (Diamond) ----------------------------------- | TW LW WO PK | -----------------------------|---------------------------| Top Pop Catalog Albums | 20 38 350 8 | -----------------------------|---------------------------| As holiday titles disappear faster than you can say "happy new year," "Immaculate" springs back into Pop Catalog top 20, a territory it previously entered only when there were major stimulators (such as the release of a new album). Sales actually take a slide from 19,566 to 12,728, but that's nothing compared to the 70%-or-so drop that hit most Christmas albums. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Hot 100 ------- Despite help from Missy Elliott, P. Diddy and Carly Simon, Janet's "Son Of A Gun" has peaked at #28. Since her "Control" album, all singles with Janet as a lead artist reached the top 10 except a #14 for "Pleasure Principle." It is important to note, however, that three tracks from "The Velvet Rope" also failed to break into airplay top 20: "Got 'Til It's Gone," "I Get Lonely" and "Go Deep." "I Get Lonely" charted at #3 thanks to strong sales, while the other two, as airplay-only singles, were ineligible for the Hot 100. Over a year after it first charted on the Hot 100, LeAnn Rimes's "Can't Fight The Moonlight" finally entered Hot 100 Airplay at #68* last week. It jumped to #49* on the Hot 100 and inches up to #48* this week. The single initially peaked at #71 on the Hot 100 in the fall of 2000. If Pink wants to keep a magazine clipping of "Get The Party Started" sitting at the top of Top 40 Tracks, she's out of luck. The track stole the crown from "How You Remind Me" in the unpublished 01/05 issue, only to give it back this week. Perhaps radio stations felt "Party" was more Christmas-y than "Remind." Similarly, Jim Brickman's "Simple Things" topped the 01/05 Adult Contemporary chart, but drops to #7 this week. Billboard 200 ------------- Creed's "Weathered" emerged as the unchallenged champion through the holiday season, and is now enjoying its sixth week at #1. The band's previous album "Human Clay" also returned to the top of Pop Catalog chart last week. Rising to #2 over a year after its release is Linkin Park's "[Hybrid Theory]," the unlikely winner of highest SoundScan sales during the calendar year 2001 (reflected in Billboard issue 01/20/2001-01/12/2002, not to be confused with the year-end charts, which summarized issue 12/02/2000-11/24/2001 and showed the Beatles' "1" as the #1 album). Unlikely, because the album never charted higher than #7 prior to this week, and did not spawn any crossover radio hit ("In The End" is just catching on, currently 15* on the Hot 100). However, rock radio airplay, MTV exposure, touring support and great word-of-mouth buoyed the album throughout the year, until it caught up with the previous SoundScan leader, Shaggy's "Hotshot," during the holiday sales surge. Pre-Christmas week has become a coveted slot for releasing rap albums, but this year the field got a little crowded. Eight rap albums debuted in the 01/05 issue: Nas (#8, 342,638), Lil' Bow Wow (#11, 319,488), Wu-Tang Clan (#32, 153,485), Mystikal (#33, 152,890), Jay-Z's "MTV Unplugged" (#34, 143,653), Ruff Ryders' "Ryde Or Die Vol III" (#38), "The Source Presents Hip Hop Hits Vol 5" (#70), and Master P (#72). In this week's post-Christmas bloodshed, few titles show any kind of sales gain, and the small number of bullets (awarded for sales loss of 20% or less) are mostly taken by hip-hop and heavy rock titles, such as Ludacris (#16->#4*), Ja Rule (#20->#8*), P.O.D. (#30->#19*), Outkast (#37->#21*), Puddle of Mudd (#36->#23*), Busta Rhymes (#44->#26*), and System of a Down (#47->#30*). Getting hit the hardest, meanwhile, are mainstream picks (read: gift choices) such as: ARTIST MOVE LOSS ------------------------------ Creed #1-> #1 54% "Now 8" #2-> #3 57% Britney Spears #4->#12 58% Garth Brooks #3->#14 65% Backstreet Boys #22->#32 57% 'NSync #25->#36 61% Andrea Bocelli #29->#40 58% Toby Keith #28->#44 61% Aaron Carter #46->#68 59% Charlotte Church #48->#71 60% 2001 - Down, Down, Down ----------------------- 763 million albums were SoundScanned in the calendar year 2001, down by 2.9% from 2000's 785 million. This is the first time since SoundScan started in 1991 that total album sales drop from year to year. One key reason is the lack of true blockbuster albums. While no album scanned past 5 million copies in 2001, seven did so in 2000, led by "No Strings Attached" with a monstrous 9.9 million. Total sales of the year's top 10 albums went from 2000's 60 million to 2001's 40, which almost accounts for the entire drop in overall album sales. The top 10 of 2001: 1. Linkin Park "[Hybrid Theory]" - 4.81 million 2. Shaggy "Hot Shot" - 4.51 million 3. 'N Sync "Celebrity" - 4.42 million 4. Enya "A Day Without Rain" - 4.41 million 5. Staind "Break the Cycle" - 4.24 million 6. Alicia Keys "Songs in A Minor" - 4.10 million 7. Destiny's Child "Survivor" - 3.72 million 8. Creed "Weathered" - 3.58 million 9. Soundtrack "O Brother, Where Art Thou" - 3.46 million 10. "Now That's What I Call Music Vol. 6" - 3.13 million Overall holiday season sales, both current and catalog, were also down, although the success of "Now! Christmas" and Mannheim Steamroller's "Christmas Extraordinaire" exceeded 2000's top holiday albums. On the singles front, overall sales plummeted from 2000's 50 million to 2001's 30 million. Hardly surprising since there are a lot less singles released, prompting many stores to demote or even remove their singles section. In 1999, 21 singles registered a combined 86 instances of weekly sales above 100,000. In 2000, seven singles hit six-digit sales for a total of 17 times. In 2001, that mark was crossed only five times by three singles ("All For You," "Loverboy" and "Bootylicious"). As sales dwindle, the Hot 100 inevitably becomes more and more airplay- driven. In 1999, 17 airplay-only or vinyl-only singles charted in the top 10, and none went to #1. In 2000, 25 such singles made the top 10, two of which hit #1 ("Try Again" and "Independent Women"). In 2001, the total grew to 34 including six #1s ("Independent Women," "It Wasn't Me," "Angel," "Lady Marmalade," "Fallin'" and "I'm Real"). Here we disregard CD or cassette singles released after a single reaches top 10 or #1. It is also becoming more common for a track to heat up R&B and pop radio at the same time, resulting in higher airplay total. Before 2001, TLC's "No Scrubs" was the only track to reach 140 million audience impression. Three tracks surpassed TLC's record in 2001: "Independent Women," "I'm Real" and the new record-holder "Fallin'" (149.3 million). Maverick Records ---------------- Tantric's album returns to the Billboard 200 (#177) for its 35th week. Their third single "Mourning" is still active at rock radio and on MTV. The soundtrack "Not Another Teen Movie" finally debuts at #180 on the Billboard 200. Mest's "Destination Unknown" returns to the Heatseekers Albums chart with sales of 5,384, a slight increase over last week. Michelle Branch's second single "All You Wanted" enters Adult Top 40 Tracks at #39. "Everywhere" has spent 20 weeks on the Hot 100 and will be removed next week since it has dropped below #50. Her album holds on the Billboard 200 at #122. -------------------------------------------- A "*" (bullet) beside a chart position marks that a single or album registered a notable gain in sales or airplay or chart points. Debut titles automatically carry bullets. Video charts and Top Internet Album Sales do not award bullets.
