*** See the end of this special report for a summary of Madonna's year-end rankings: from 1994 to 2001. U.S. Charts 2001 Year-End (12/29/2001 issue) The "chart year" 2001 runs from the 12/02/2000 issue to the 11/24/2001 issue. This in turn reflects sales and airplay between 11/13/2000 and 11/11/2001 (and 11/15/2000-11/13/2001 for composite airplay charts). That is why 2000's holiday favorites, not 2001's, would place high on these year-end charts. For most charts, the year-end recap is ranked by each title's accumulated airplay, sales or chart points during its run on that chart. The umbrella categories (such as Pop Artists) and the report-based Club Play categories are based on a point system derived from chart positions. Number in parenthesis is the number of charted titles by an artist. === P O P === Chart Entry Position ============================================================ Top Pop Artists Madonna (4) 33 ------------------------------------------------------------ Top Billboard 200 Artists Madonna (1) 46 Top Billboard 200 Albums "Music" 49 ------------------------------------------------------------ Hot 100 Artists Madonna (3) 23 Hot 100 Artists - Female Madonna (3) 8 Hot 100 Singles & Tracks "Don't Tell Me" 34 ------------------------------------------------------------ Hot 100 Singles Sales "Don't Tell Me" 16 Hot 100 Singles Sales "Music" 46 Hot 100 Singles Sales "What It Feels Like..." 71 Hot 100 Airplay "Don't Tell Me" 43 ============================================================ Madonna would have placed #11 on both Top Pop Artists - Female and Top Billboard 200 Artists - Female. However, only ten women are listed for either of those lists. For the first time in history, the Beatles have Billboard's #1 album of the year. (Note, however, that before the SoundScan era started in late 1991, Billboard's year-end album recap was based on chart performance instead of raw sales.) After the Fab Four's aptly-titled "1," the top 10 of the album recap consists of Shaggy, Backstreet Boys, "Now 5", Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Staind, Enya, 'NSync and Nelly. Stamina pays off as the long-running hit "Hangin' By A Moment" tops both Hot 100 Singles & Tracks and Hot 100 Airplay recaps, even though it peaked at #2 on both charts. The gap between airplay and sales widens: Most top singles on the airplay recap were never released on CD or cassette format, while three of the top four on sales recap ("Loverboy," "Get Over Yourself" and "Liquid Dreams") were not airplay hits. On the Hot 100 Artists recap, Destiny's Child takes the top honor with five chart entries. Jennifer Lopez and Janet round out an all-female top three. Destiny's Child also leads the combined Top Pop Artists roster, where they are followed by Shaggy and Jennifer Lopez. === D A N C E === Chart Entry Position ============================================================ Hot Dance Club-Play Artists Madonna (3) 1 Hot Dance Club-Play Singles "Don't Tell Me" 7 Hot Dance Club-Play Singles "What It Feels..." 24 Hot Dance Club-Play Imprints Maverick (3) 11 ------------------------------------------------------------ Hot Dance Maxi-Singles Sales Artists Madonna (3) 2 Hot Dance Maxi-Singles Sales "Music" 4 Hot Dance Maxi-Singles Sales "What It Feels..." 5 Hot Dance Maxi-Singles Sales "Don't Tell Me" 15 ------------------------------------------------------------ Hot Dance Imprints Maverick (4) 3 ============================================================ Madonna writes another glorious chapter of success on the dance charts. Coincidentally, she reprises her positions on last year's Club-Play Artists and Maxi-Singles Sales Artists recaps, while Destiny's Child retain their crown as #1 Maxi-Singles Sales Artist. On Club-Play Artists, Janet plays bridesmaid to Madonna, despite "All For You" and "Someone To Call My Lover" nabbing #3 and #28 spots on the Club-Play Singles recap. "Impressive Instant," whose chart run straddled 2001 and 2002 chart years, probably was the winning card for Madonna. On Maxi-Singles Sales Artists, Destiny's Child's domination is evident with five charted titles, including #1, #3, #12 and #20 on the recap. There is no Hot Dance Artists recap, but Madonna single-handedly put Maverick at #3 on the Hot Dance Imprints list. === T O P 4 0 === Chart Entry Position ============================================================ Hot Adult Top 40 Tracks "Don't Tell Me" 15 Hot Top 40 Tracks "Don't Tell Me" 21 ============================================================ Top 40 Tracks is a composite chart combining Mainstream Top 40, Rhythmic Top 40 and Adult Top 40 formats. THE WORLD IS A STAGE: With a gross of $74,051,171 from 47 shows, Madonna ranks #4 on AB Boxscores' Top 25 Tours list (12/11/2000-12/03/2001). U2, 'NSync and Backstreet Boys finish in the top three. U2 and Madonna are the only acts on the list who sold out every show. Meanwhile, Madonna's New York, London, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Paris and Michigan dates crowd the Top 25 Boxscores list at #3, #4, #5, #8, #22 and #24, respectively. She is upstaged by The Concert for New York City and Michael Jackson's 30th-Anniversary Tribute, both with ticket prices up in the thousands. It is not surprising, therefore, that ClearChannel Entertainment Touring took out a full-page ad in this issue to thank Madonna and her manager Caresse Henry, calling the Drowned World Tour "a true global success." HOT, EURO-HOT: After making #12 in 2000, "Music" ranks #10 on Europe's Top Albums of 2001, based on "Music & Media's" data compiled from 16 European countries. === A SIDE-BY-SIDE COMPARISON: 1994 - 2001 === Here we compare Madonna's presence in the last eight year-end issues. As you can see, Madonna has maintained a fairly consistent level of success, showing a shift from mid 90s' ballad hits to recent years' dominance in the dance field. Even though the airplay success of "I'll Remember" and "Take A Bow" has not been repeated, her latest singles stood out in the dwindling singles sales market. Keep in mind, some singles and albums are handicapped on the year-end charts because their chart runs spanned two chart years.
