U.S. Charts 12/08/2001
This issue tracks sales from Thanksgiving week (11/19-11/25). Overall
album sales jump from 15.5 million to 22.2 million, still 5% below the
level seen by last year's Thanksgiving week. Singles sales also increase
from an all-time low of 306,000 to 357,000.

Thanks to the holiday boost, "GHV2" becomes the first Madonna album in
the SoundScan era to show second-week sales growth. It sells 164,000,
but the 9% increase is not enough for a bullet. In two weeks "GHV2" has
sold more than "Something To Remember" did in its first three weeks.

Scanning 9,100 copies - a drop of almost half from last week - the tour
is knocked out of the top spot by Britney Spears's new video collection.
Actually, U2's "Elevation Tour 2001" sells 23,000 compared to Britney's
15,000, but that title is ineligible to chart as it is sold exclusively
at Best Buy. It will become eligible in two weeks when it becomes
available at all retailers.

Unless the video re-enters, it will be the shortest-living Madonna video
on the VH-1 monitor as far as my record goes back (to "Secret"). "Human
Nature" and "I Want You" each had a three-week stint, peaking at #22 and
#11, respectively. All other Madonna videos reached #6 or higher.

Purely useless trivia: Among all of Madonna's Club Play #1s since 1994,
"Instant" has the highest position in the second week after peaking.
Four of those tracks dropped 1-3-7, and "Don't Tell Me" moved 1-2-7.

Hot 100
-------
Nickelback's "How You Remind Me" moves #4->#3* as it wins Greatest
Gainer/Airplay for the second time in three weeks. A 16.5 million
increase brings its audience impression to 120.5 million, making it the
first rock song ever - and the ninth overall - to cross the 120 mark.
The previous airplay record for a rock song was 116 million, set by the
ubiquitous hit "Smooth."
"Remind" is the fourth song in 2001 to enter the top 5 on Hot 100 after
topping Modern Rock Tracks. The other three were "Hanging By A Moment,"
"Butterfly" and "It's Been A While." In 2000, "Kryptonite" was the only
song to do so. In 1999, "Every Morning" was the sole example.
A new commercial single for "Only Time," featuring the radio remix,
scans 14,000 units and ranks #3 on Singles Sales. The B-side "Olche
Chium (Silent Night)" is also available on a different single, which
jumps #74->#49* on Singles Sales with around 1,000 sold (60% increase).
On the Hot 100, "Only Time" holds at #12*.
Billboard 200
-------------
Eight albums sell over 200,000, and 23 sell over 100,000. Last year's
Thanksgiving week, the counts were nine and 27. In terms of new entries,
this year's 31 beats last year's 21.
Creed's "Weathered" storms the chart with 887,225 copies sold. Their
last album "Human Clay" opened with 315,000 in October 1999. Thanks to
two crossover hits, "Clay" spent a total of 44 weeks in the top 10 and
reached Diamong status. On this week's Top Pop Catalog Albums, "Clay"
moves #5->#3* as sales more than double, while the band's first album
"My Own Prison," now 5-Platinum, ranks #11 with a 81% increase. "My
Sacrifice," the lead single from "Weathered," is currently #17* on the
Hot 100. Creed performed at the football game on Thanksgiving Day, as
well as on Saturday Night Live the weekend before.
"Weathered" replaces the three-week-old "Britney" as the second-biggest
opener of 2001, behind only "Celebrity." Dave Matthews Band's "Everyday"
ranks a close fourth. If the strong showing of rock albums surprise you,
don't forget that between 1991 and 1998, it was Guns 'N Roses and then
Pearl Jam who spearheaded the list of biggest opening weeks. "Weathered"
currently ranks 11th on that list.
"Now 8" debuts at #2 with 548,900, the third-highesting opening sales of
the series. Kid Rock, who also reached Diamond with his 1998 album but
does not have a current hit, may not feel so "Cocky" as the album limps
its way to #7 with sales of 222,875. That's a quarter of "Weathered's"
total, and less than half of the 456,000 Kid managed last year with the
retro-collection "The History Of Rock." That album entered at #2, barely
pushing Britney Spears's "Oops...I Did It Again" down #2->#3 in its
third week. This week, coincidentally, Britney Spears's "Britney" moves
#2->#3 in its third week. "Britney" actually increases sales by over a
third, to 451,000, following her HBO concert special. Garth Brooks's
"Scarecrow" follows closely with 442,750 - a small 5% erosion from last
week, even though his CBS concert special received only so-so rating.
Pink presents another case of career growth as "M!ssundaztood" reaches
220,175 listeners for a #8 debut. Time to "get the party started"? That
track jumps to #9* on this week's Hot 100. Pink's debut album peaked at
#26 last year and spawned two top 10 hits.
Other new entries include Timbaland & Magoo (#29), Ghostface Kilalah
(#34), Jill Scott (#38), Mick Jagger (#39), Sting's live album (#40);
Prince (#109), The Temptations (#140), and the Latin all-star tribute EP
"El Ultimo Adios" (#197). And believe it or not, more hits packages:
Smashing Pumpkins' 1-CD with 2-CD limited edition (#31), Bee Gees' 2-CD
"The Record" (#49), Clint Black (#97), Kiss's 5-CD "The Box Set" (#128),
and Aerosmith's 2-CD "Anthology" (#191).
Thanksgiving probably marks the official start of Christmas shopping.
Just look at the charts: "Now That's What I Call Christmas" climbs ten
rungs to #5* with 231,175 sold.
One year ago, Enya's "A Day Without A Rain" started its journey at #23
with 119,000 copies sold. Who would have expected that one year later,
it would become a staple in the top 10 heading into the holiday season?
Over on Top New Age Albums, the album spent the entire year at #1.
Maverick Records
----------------
"Platinum Rhythm," the inaugural release from Maverick's Latin music
branch, peaked at #42 on Top Latin Albums two weeks ago, and missed the
Billboard 200 altogether. The compilation features quite a lineup of
Latin and pop superstars, including a Robbie Rivera Remix of "Music."
Mest's ominously-titled album "Destination Unknown" debuted at #12 on
Top Heatseekers Albums last week (the top six entries made the Billboard
200). It drops to #49 this week.
Marilyn Manson's cover version of "Tainted Love," from the upcoming
Maverick soundtrack "Not Another Teen Movie," enters Modern Rock Tracks
at #40 and Mainstream Rock Tracks at #38.
Tantric's third single "Mourning," already top 20 on Mainstream Rock,
is now also charting on Modern Rock.
--------------------------------------------
A "*" (bullet) beside a chart position marks that a single or album
registered a notable gain in sales or airplay or chart points. Debut
titles automatically carry bullets. Video charts and Top Internet Album
Sales do not award bullets.
