Kelvom NEWS Shock rocker Marilyn Manson belts a song at the
Roseland Ballroom, on a night where sound troubles
barely rankled the black-clad crowd.
Even as the sound system at Roseland Ballroom went to hell in a
handbasket last night, seasoned shocker Marilyn Manson and his fans
showed the patience of saints.
Suffice it to say the black-clad crowd didn't enjoy the silence smack
dab in the middle of the Depeche Mode cover "Personal Jesus," and a
few boos rang out when the house went quiet save for the faint sound
of the band's stage amps. Manson and band disappeared from the stage
for five minutes.
"He's going to have an Axl moment," sniped one fan, referring to the
former Guns 'n Roses front man's storming off stages. But when Manson
reemerged before the sound was resurrected, he seemed to forgive and
forget. Then, back at full ear-numbing power, he made only one
comment about the flub, an R-rated version of an annoying cell phone
commercial.
"Can you m------------ hear me now?" Manson asked.
And fans came alive again. They were too dolled up to give up on
fiendish fun. "I make an outfit for every show," said a 38-year-old
Pittsfield, Mass., woman who called herself "138." She wore a white-
striped bustier, pale makeup, piercings and black-dyed angular hair.
Many in attendance seemed similarly inspired by the man behind the
Against All Gods Tour, even otherwise jock-like young men who dabbed
grease paint or makeup around their eyes for the occasion.
Manson, to his credit, kept the rock cranking with "mOBSCENE," "Fight
Song," and Soft Cell cover "Tainted Love" from his latest best-of
release "Lest We Forget." And even with fewer evil bodily twists and
androgynous Michael Jackson-like poses than in years past, the man (or
whatever gender he's choosing now) boasted mesmerizing visuals - a
huge American flag backdrop, a performance on stilts and a downpour of
confetti.
Noticeably absent outside was the usual throng of protesters, who only
seemed to spur on Manson in years past. Then again, not even a
sputtering sound system could quiet him for long.
