Indeed, the fact that he has courted so much controversy outside of the music (Columbine and the protests from the Christian far-right in particular), could've made it easy to get distracted. Once you delve beneath the exaggerated news stories and remove the caricature - and yes this does add to the appeal - the music stands alone. "Lest We Forget: The Best Of" assembles Marilyn Manson's biggest hits in addition to a brand new cover song. It represents a veritable primer for this often-misunderstood artist, and documents Manson's rise to infamy - beginning with material from 'Portrait of an American Family' (1994) through to the more recent album 'The Golden Age of Grotesque' (2003). The change in style and approach over these albums is also noteworthy. Whilst initial offerings were aimed to shock, subsequent tracks exhibited a progression towards more of a social commentary. It is interesting that alongside the string of big hits, including "The Dope Show" and "Disposable Teens", Manson has included a string of covers - all of which have received the Goth makeover. "Tainted Love", never a particularly scary song in the first place, has been reinterpreted into a dark, haunting anthem. His "Sweet Dreams" version is a lingering industrial-glam offering, whilst "Personal Jesus" (originally recorded by Depeche Mode and the only new song) is even more menacing than the initially conceived dark electronic-rock song. The signature tune, and perhaps the one that epitomises Manson the most, is the raw and aggressive "The Beautiful People". This track proved to be popular to both the MTV generation and the radio. Surprisingly though the excellent "Coma White" is absent although it is included as one of the 20 videos on the DVD version. Like all great bands that are indicative of - and manage to represent - the current cultural and social climate, Manson signifies an antithesis to the safe saccharine pop world, an underbelly or counter culture to cherry pie, strawberry milkshake America. Throughout his career, the self-proclaimed Antichrist Superstar has been the subject of much critical prose. Often disregarded or undermined because of his supposedly anti-Christian and anti-moral messages he speaks his mind on issues that may not wish to be heard by the Establishment and in doing so his music has ended up in widespread circulation. This, one can imagine, is exactly what he wanted and in doing so adds a value to him both musically and individually. Lest We Forget is an overview and a culmination of ten controversial years.
