2004-10-04 LEST WE FORGET - 5 out of 5 Stars It's good timing for a Marilyn Manson retrospective, then: a must-have CD-DVD package, dripping with cleverness... I salute this band's artistry and underlying politics which gnaw at all the things wrong with American hypocrisy. The fact that the music rocks completes the equation. Buy now. ▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ Sun, October 3, 2004 Manson retrospective a creepy treat FISH GRIWKOWSKY, EDMONTON SUN FREELANCE LEST WE FORGET: THE BEST OF MARILYN MANSON Marilyn Manson Interscope 5 out of 5 Dang, but if I don't feel goth-industrial today, y'all! It's good timing for a Marilyn Manson retrospective, then: a must-have CD-DVD package, dripping with cleverness, from one of the most curious descendants of Alice Cooper. Like Stephen King, the Manson Show understands that one really sinister way to milk horror out of something is to envelop it completely in the familiar, to slightly tweak that which we know into something unfamiliar. His very name is evidence of this, and while his music deals with somewhat controversial topics, let's face it, it's all just a collection of driving, solid, emotional rock dealing with alienation. Manson's famous '80s covers are all here: Sweet Dreams are Made of This, Tainted Love and Personal Jesus, the last of which has been done by everyone from David Gogo to Johnny Cash (not to mention the original by Depeche Mode). Manson drags out the pathos in these with his furry-mould voice, Borg-ifying the music with twitchy, prosthetic synths to good effect. Sadly, I Put a Spell on You from the Lost Highway soundtrack isn't here, nor is the super-creepy Apple of Sodom from the same. That's OK, he's got plenty of other hits for us, like the awesome freak anthem The Beautiful People, the anti-religious The Fight Song and a couple numbers off my favourite Manson album, Mechanical Animals, which was an incredibly thorough reworking of Ziggy Stardust. The songs fit together very nicely here on the disc, but it's actually the DVD that really does it. Manson is a calculating visual artist whose stuff is so over the top you almost can't believe anyone is stupid enough to get upset about it. His videos are full of goth cheerleaders, monster crucifixions, Kennedy assassination parodies, cops in pink making out with each other, insane contact lenses, embryos in jars and Gruesomes mutations of just about anything you can think of. The use of colour, filters and images is actually quite beautiful at times; for example, the reflection on a windshield of some overhanging lanterns is very pretty, as is, in a weird way, Manson dressed as Guadalupe. Which doesn't even get into how sexy this ugly man looks dressed as a woman, which can seriously freak you out. I salute this band's artistry and underlying politics which gnaw at all the things wrong with American hypocrisy. The fact that the music rocks completes the equation.
