HERO OR villain? Sicko or artiste? Playboy? Comedian? God?
Marilyn Manson is the master of attention-seeking. But between the
image changes, controversy and tabloid interest, the music has often
taken a back seat.
Time, then, for a reminder that behind every dickless crotch,
every set of stilts and every inflammatory slogan was a fine musician.
His art: a twisted blend of KMFDM's industrial metal, his mentor Trent
Reznor's dark prog leanings and David Bowie's intelligent pop weirdness.
Marilyn Manson is not -- and probably never will be -- as credible
a musical force as any of those people. He's more follower than
leader in many ways. But he has taken these basic ideas and moulded
them into something unique. It's creppy and thunderous enough for
metal freaks but coated in a hook-laden commercial sheen that injects
him right into the heart of the mainstream.
Listen to 'Rock Is Dead', 'mOBSCENE' or 'This Is The New Shit' to
hear how important a walloping chorus is in Manson-ville. Then there
are the glam-metal stompers on which he made his name -- 'Disposable
Teens', 'The Beautiful People' -- and of course those covers --
'Tainted Love', 'Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)' and newie 'Personal
Jesus'. It's all highly-buffed, theatrical pop-metal of the highest order.
As rock 'n' roll pantomimes go, the Marilyn Manson story is about
as good as they get. And this is its utterly compelling musical score.
