'Idol'coaches panel:Can Mariah take this year's hopefuls higher
還有不到兩小時 AI的小瑪周就要正式開始了
今天的USA Today特地請了幾位來對於今天小瑪擔任"Mentor"提出看法
想看節目的人 可以看水管或是BT eMule來低調

Mariah Carey's intricate and flowery vocal style has strongly influenced Idol
contestants and arguably produced any number of disasters. So with Mariah
mentoring the contestants tonight, we asked the coaches if she is truly an
appropriate musical role model for impressionable young Idols.
Charlie Toft: Not an ideal choice
Mariah would not have been my first choice for mentor. Her songs have always
seemed to me to elevate technique over all other musical considerations,
which is exactly my major issue with judging on Idol. She has an amazing
range, but few of her hits have been especially memorable. Her singles aren't
hummable and tend not to have quotable lyrics. They all tend to run together.
There's also something wrong with a woman who seemed more mature at age 20
than she does now pushing 40. I mean, seriously: Touch My Body?
Rona Elliot: Match made in 'Idol' heaven
Whether or not Mariah rings your bell, her commercial success is indisputable
, as is Idol's. It's a match made in heaven. I immersed myself in Mariah's
music to deconstruct it. The result: a three-hour migraine. The gods showered
her with astonishing musical gifts. But every word she sings has three notes
in it. It's exhausting, annoying and a vocal trick that her fans eat up.
But she understands music, and she will be able to connect with the singers,
who will be in absolute awe of her vocal gymnastics and commercial success.
Gene Sculatti: Imitations will backfire
I don't see what Carey's presence can offer the Final Seven at this point.
The form of over-sung power ballads she excels at is already the one form
favored above all others by Idol judges and contestants. While her vocal
approach has been widely copied, it's an idiosyncratic style that may not
translate so well in the throats of others. Someone will take on one of her
signature excess-Hollywood exercises and then be criticized by Randy, Simon
and Paula for just not measuring up to the greatness of La Carey.
Don Waller: Don't go there
The concept of Little Miss Teakettle being any sort of proper musical role
model would be laughable — if so many people didn't take her go-for-baroque
vocal stylings seriously. Basically, thinking that all this holding a note
until your audience runs out of breath and gratuitously leaping into a
glass-shattering falsetto constitutes good singing is like thinking someone's
a good writer because she can type really fast or has a big vocabulary.
If I wanted to see music reduced to an athletic competition,
I'd go see how far someone could toss a piano. Pop music has never been
about subtleties, but if you're an aspiring Idol, don't go there.
