Can anything new emerge out of Chinese R&B after what David Tao, Wang Lee Hom
and Jay Chou have done with the genre?
Well, judging by the excellent body of work from Haiwaii-born Hongkonger Khalil
'Soulboy' Fong, the answer is an emphatic 'yes'.
Orange Moon, his fourth and latest album, is an exemplary effort.
Espousing a distinct back-to-basics, less-is-more ethos, Fong's forte lies in
simple yet beautiful melodies that linger long after the CD has stopped
spinning.
His sound is at once contemporary (in the vein of modern soul popsters Jason
Mraz, John Legend and Robin Thicke) and rooted in the classic Motown vibe
personified by 1970s-era Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson.Being an adherent of
the pacifist Bahai faith, the multiple award-winning singer-songwriter preaches
love and reproduces in the CD sleeve a verse from the teachings of its founder,
Baha'u'llah, that extols the virtues of possessing 'a pure, kindly and radiant
heart'.
The mostly Mandarin album kicks off with an English-language cut, the beati-fic
Singalong Song, which also serves as an apt reminder of Fong's first language.
Bearing this in mind, you could overlook his accented Mandarin diction - which is
not difficult in the face of Fong's catchy, groovy tunes that are big on hooks.
