CASH, according to this new Channel U drama series, is king. In
the debut episode, there is liberal mention of how important cash
is to the show's many cash-starved characters.
Alongside this is corruption, an affair and even suicide.
The new drama looks gorgeous.
Judging from the first episode, it looks as if loads of cash have
been pumped into this project.
It's slick and populated by stunning lookers.
Veteran Taiwanese actor, Chin Han plays a TV gameshow host with
a cheating wife (Michelle Yim) and a headstrong script-writer (
Kit Chan).
The script-writer ends up becoming his second wife later in the
series.
His brother (Darren Lim) is a sexually-ambiguous (meaning, he
could be gay, or not) chicken rice stall owner.
Kit leads with Chin Han, whose charm left many females sighing
and pining three decades ago.
Supporting roles are played by a stable of Channel U and Hongkong
stars such as Ix Shen, Bryan Wong, Wallis Pang and veteran actor
Wang Xiu Yun.
The one advantage an on-going serial has over an episodic series
is that it has time for the essence of its storyline to percolate.
So the characters in the first episode might well end up becoming
multi-faceted humans eliciting myriad emotions from us.
Look out for characters who haven't made an appearance yet.
Singer Shirley Yee's materialistic, slutty Dian may just be a winner.
She is impressive even from the "making-of" edition of the show.
And Adam Chen looks suitably rich, lost and devastatingly handsome
from the show's trailers.
Cash Is King is a look at mostly unsavoury characters - and it's
always great fun to see how much they suffer because of greed.
Remember how much we loved Dallas and Dynasty?
Cash Is King will air on Channel U on Wednesdays, Thursdays and
Fridays at 8pm. The first episode airs tonight.
