http://www.mediacorpsingapore.com/entertainment/feature/2001041102a.htm Rocky road to showbiz Why did the established singer who has 15 albums, 2 musicals, a poem book, a TV serial and 14 awards under her belt in her 8 years of singing career, only just start to plan for her very first personal concert? "Actually, we had been approached for concerts before, but somehow, both parties had never quite reached a level of agreement. To me, quality is very important, if I want to do something, I want to make sure that it is the best. "Besides, my career is not without obstacles. It is only now that I feel very ready for a concert and there is no better partner than Ocean Butterflies (her management company) that I can think of," says a serious Kit. In 1993, when Kit was still an unschooled 20-year-old, she released her maiden album, Do Not Destroy The Harmony. Although the media was very supportive of local talents, the response from Singaporeans had been less than lukewarm. "I had practically no jobs in my first year as a singer. Ocean Butterflies had been very supportive, finding me other jobs like singing jingles. My annual salary for that year was like only $6000. "I was very poor but the directors of Ocean Butterflies had it worse. They even had to mortgage their houses for loans in order to keep me going, I didn't know that then, it was only when things picked up that Huanliang (her mentor) told me. The kind of faith they had in me, it was simply amazing," gushes a grateful Kit. That was not all. In 1996, the record companies in Taiwan and Singapore got entangled in a lawsuit, and somehow, Kit was implicated. "There was a period of time when I could not release any albums and when the media asked why there was no new album, we had to come up with all sorts of excuses because it was not meant to be discussed. I hate to lie." Fortunately, that was also the period when Jacky Cheung invited her to join in the musical, Snow Wolf Lake, which marked her kickoff in the Cantonese market. "I guess I'm blessed, but with a price," she adds quickly, "I have to work real hard." Indeed, after all the hard work all these years, it's time for her to showcase her achievements during the concert. Way to go, Kit! That's Kit Concert 2001 is on June 9 at the Indoor Stadium.
