PRELUDE TO A CONCERT
Chan digs into her Kit for first solo
Kit Chan is working hard to put up her $800,000 show this June.

AFTER eight years in the business, Kit Chan, Singapore's most
prolific singer, is ready to stage her solo concert at the
Singapore Indoor Stadium on June 9.
And she is working very hard to put on a good show.

'I'm pumping iron three times a week now,' says the 28-year-old
singer and actress at a press conference last Friday at the DBS
Building.
'A lot of energy will go into this live concert. The pitching,
the body language, the feet, the fingertips, even the back!
Your back gotta be ah-live!' she says, straightening up in her
chair and running both palms dramatically down her back.
There is good cause for adequate preparation, too. Says concert
director Richard Tan, 45: 'It's going to be a full-size, four-sided
arena stage where she actually gets close to the audience. It's
going to draw a lot out of her, mentally and physically.
'Unlike the normal three-sided stage where you can hide behind a
curtain and change, Kit will be on stage most of the time.'
Which is not to say Chan will not have costume changes. In fact,
the $800,000 show will include no less than $60,000 worth of
wardrobe for the star.
PITCHING IT RIGHT: Body language is among the things Kit Chan is
working on for her concert
'She's a singer and an actress, so you've got to give the girl
something good to put on,' says Mr Tan.
For all the fans wanting to get their money's worth, the true-blue
performer in Chan - who jokingly calls herself a 'drama-queen' -
agrees: 'I believe for a proper performance, you cannot get clothes
off the rack.'
Chan teases cheekily: 'You can expect dramatic, theatrical and
playful moments, and some surprises in store.'
Says Mr Colin Goh, 38, executive director of Ocean Butterflies,
Chan's record label: 'We had offers to produce a concert in 1999,
but after some talks we realised it wasn't with the ideal partner.
Kit and I decided not to compromise the quality of the show.'
And quality is what you can expect from Chan's concert. Says Mr Tan,
shaking his head and smiling: 'Man, I've never seen her work so hard.'
Kit Chan's concert will be held at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on
June 9. Tickets at $40, $60, $80 and $100 will be available from
Sistic(call 348-5555) from Saturday.
