A Most Predictable Award Show
by T. Chisato
What if Faye had also attended, would she have walked away with the
Most Popular Female Artist title? If yes, then what would the
organizers award Sammi Cheng with, or would she have attended at all
? And if Stefanie Sun had not attended, would there still be the
Starhub Most Promising Artist Award? These questions were asked over
and over again as my friends and I left the Harbour Pavilion after
last Saturday night’s Singapore Hit Awards 2000. For sure, many of
you who have attended would have walked away with the same doubts as
I did.
Indeed the Hit Awards 2000 was a night of the expected. None of the
stars who attended the show left without an award. David Tao, the
talented singer/songwriter who flew in all the way from the United
States was the biggest winner of all, with 2 awards. Of course, as
expected, Sammi won the Most Popular Female Artiste.
Despite all its predictability, the organisers did spring a few
surprises on the audience that night. The one which shocked most media
and fans alike was how Faye Wong, winner of SPVA’s (Singapore
Phonogram & Video Association) Best Selling Album, came in second
to Sammi Cheng and Fann Wong in the fight for Singapore’s Most Popular
Female Artist. And then there are the many hiccups which caused much
embarrassment to both Power Station and David Tao. The microphones went
dead during Power Station’s performance and David Tao was mistakenly
invited on stage by the hosts to give out a later award.
Not forgetting a couple of thank-you speeches that was worth remembering.
One was the joke played by Li Feihui who won Best Local Lyrics for one
of Jacky Cheung’s hits. While he was on stage accepting the award, he
took out his mobile phone and acted out the scene from one of Jacky’s
mobile phone commercials, as if speaking with someone on the other line,
he thanked the sponsor Starhub for it’s good reception. That sent the
audience into a good laugh.
The ultra cool Wu Bai, who received the Merit Award, gave the other
notable thank-you speech. Wu Bai questioned why he, for one who had not
received any other awards in the history of the Hit Awards, was surprising
honored with the Merit Award. That’s one worth thinking about.
With its many unpleasant hiccups and lack of excitement, the Singapore
Hit Awards is on ground for more improvements. For one, it needs to gain
credibility from fans and media. More importantly, it needs the support
of artists who must learn what sportsmanship is really about.
Now, if only I can stop asking myself what if Faye had come!
