SEP 18, 2000 Everyone's a winner at Hit awards All the Chinese pop stars present won awards at Radio Corporation of Singapore's annual music bash By TEO PAU LIN HERE is a friendly tip to all who look forward to future Singapore Hit Awards. To know who the winners of the Radio Corporation of Singapore's annual Chinese music extravaganza are, you need only look at the guest list. This year's event, held on Sept 16 at the Harbour Pavilion, was dotted with Chinese pop luminaries including Sammi Cheng, Wu Bai, David Tao, Power Station, Kit Chan, Tanya Chua and Jolin Tsai. And guess what? They all won awards. Even Stefanie Sun, Singapore's latest pop darling who was not nominated in any category because her debut album, She Is Sun Yanzi, was released outside the qualifying period, was honoured. She won in a newly-created category as Most Promising Artiste. Not that anyone was complaining, of course. All award winners got to perform. And Sun's win gave the audience a chance to see that the 22-year-old songbird can really carry a tune live. The loudest cheers from the audience went to Taiwanese duo Power Station, who was named Best Group, and Cantopop queen Sammi Cheng, who was voted Most Popular Female Artiste. Glaringly, the loudest -- and only -- jeers of the evening went to homegrown actress-singer Fann Wong, who was not at the event. She came in second after Cheng in the same category. Surprising many in the auditorium, Cheng beat Faye Wong, Chang Huei-mei and Sandy Lam in a category in which 50 per cent of the votes to decide the winner came from a listeners' poll. But without a doubt, a running theme and highlight of the evening was Taiwanese rocker Wu Bai. Sitting glum-faced throughout the proceedings, the famed man of few words was the target of the show's comperes, who tried -- sometimes in vain -- to make him smile. It was only when he won the Merit Award for special achievement that a gush of grateful emotions broke through. Backstage at a post-award press conference, he cut quite a different figure as he dealt, briefly and a little reluctantly, with reporters. The conclusion? He actually smiles quite a lot -- at journalists, at flubbing his lines before television cameras, and especially at fans clamouring for photographs. As he explains to his fans in a TV spot: ""Even though I don't talk very much offstage, it doesn't mean I don't like you.'' -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HONOUR ROLL Best New Artiste Jolin Tsai Best Album Production David Tao (I'm OK) Most Promising Artiste Stefanie Sun Best Local Lyrics Li Feihui (Wounded Heart, Jacky Cheung) Best Local Music Composition Tanya Chua (Remember, Tanya Chua) Best-selling SPVA Album Only Love Strangers, Faye Wong Most Charismatic Stage Performer Aaron Kwok Best Group Power Station Best Local Act Kit Chan Song Of The Year At Least There's You, Sandy Lam Best Female Vocal Artiste Faye Wong Best Male Vocal Artiste David Tao Merit Award Wu Bai Most Popular Male Artiste Jeff Chang Most Popular Female Artiste Sammi Cheng -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.twbbs.org) ◆ From: g883456.SHAN.ab.nthu.edu.tw
