Everyone's waiting with abated breath for local songbird Kit Chan to release
a new album; no one expected her to come out with a new album of covers.
Singer Kit Chan kept fans waiting the last six years, when she went from
stage acting to TV actress -- even leaving showbiz for a while to work in a
PR company.
After the long hiatus, Kit is finally making her singing comeback with
Reinterpreting Kit Chan, an album solely comprising of covers.
Yesterday, the singer held her press conference in a dimly-lit bar at Royal
Plaza on Scotts. It was a relaxed affair as Kit co-hosted the press
conference with good friend Yang Junwei, where the latter called it a
"reunion".
Kit explained that the album drought was because she "did not have feel" to
do it. It was not until one day in December 2009, that it came to her.
Kit added that the idea of doing a cover album was not new to her. Her
previous company had once proposed the idea, but the singer rejected it. At
that time, Kit found it "unbelievable" that the company requested her not to
pronounce her English accurately, in order to fit into the market.
The singer explained that contrary to what people believed, a cover album is
not easy to do. One must have the "confidence and maturity" to reinvent the
songs again, so that they have a different vibe from the original.
"Otherwise, it would just be a copy," Kit said.
Kit, who was involved in the production of the album from beginning to end,
first decided the theme of the album, which was minimalism. Together with her
local producers Goh Kheng Leong and Ke Gui Min, who were also at the press
conference, they decided to go with the unplugged sound.
The trio said that they chose to use the one-take method when recording the
songs in this album. This meant the entire song was recorded at the same
time, in contrast to the usual method of song recording nowadays, which was
to record various parts of the song at various times before piecing them into
a complete song.
So how did she decide which songs to be in the album?
"There are some songs which I've always wanted to sing, such as 'Bridge over
Troubled Waters'. Then, there are songs which I like [...] and songs that
other people introduced me," Kit said.
In this latest album, the singer specially paid tribute to local singer Mavis
Hee by covering the latter's popular song 'Regrets'. Kit also hoped that her
fellow singer would return to the music scene.
"I think many of us miss Mavis's voice a lot. Until now, I think nobody
sounds like her," Kit declared.
Another song in the album, which meant a lot to her, was her cover of Michael
Bublé's 'Home'. Apart from having always loved the song and describing it as
"very human", Kit said it also had an association to the National Day song
'Home', which she sang in 1998.
"It's one of those songs which I hear on the radio and go 'I want to sing
that damn song, it's so good," Kit gushed. Her enthusiasm elicited chuckles
from everyone present.
With two sold-out concerts for the upcoming Hua Yi Festival, would Kit
consider throwing a solo concert?
"The sold-out concerts proved that local audiences love to hear me sing.
There were plans of throwing a concert, but I kept pushing it back. There
will be a concert before the year ends," Kit promised.
Kit Chan's latest album Re-interpreting Kit Chan will be released on Jan 25.
