It is also relatively well known that Chan, who is best known for her powerful Mando-pop ballads in the 1990s, will be returning from a stint as a campaign specialist with public relations firm Hill & Knowlton. However, what exactly happened to the singer in the 19 months she spent there is a matter of some conjecture. Some people speculated that she had an easy time and just lent her name to the firm; others thought she got special treatment as a celebrity. Chan revealed the truth during our e-mail interview. "People were curious and didn't quite know what to do with me at the beginning, especially when I was behaving like such a dork and an alien. "I remember being so excited on my first day at the office when I was given the office key and access card. I kept swiping the card again and again, going in and out of the main door," said Chan. Of course, there was also (among many others) the curious incident with a pair of purple Wellington boots. "Although I bought a whole new work wardrobe for my corporate life, there were days when I couldn't resist going crazy with my fashion choices, like a pair of purple Marc Jacobs Wellingtons on a particularly rainy day," Chan said. "Let's just say it didn't go down too well with some people, so I never wore them again!" Wet-Weather Romance The 37-year-old singer eventually managed to fit in and learnt a lot from her time at the PR firm, but her interest was still in music and theatre. "Absence does make the heart grow fonder." "[Showbiz] was a huge part of my adult life after all, so coming back to it again is just like coming home to something very familiar and comfortable. The upside of it is that it is refreshing and exciting again," said the singer, who is currently hard at work rehearsing for "December Rains". Set in 1950s Singapore, the melancholic drama "December Rains" will see Chan play Li Qing, a woman who falls in love with Xiong (Broadway star George Chan), but is separated from him by her disapproving parents. She later forbids her own daughter Meng Yu (Judee Tan) from seeing her lover. When asked if she had similar experiences, Chan confided that her parents did interfere in her love life when she was younger. "Oh yes! For all sorts of reasons, but they all seem pretty legitimate looking back ... ," said Chan, who has been dating her boyfriend, a banker in his 40s, for five years now. "If I had kids, and they dated people I didn't like, hell yeah, I will make things very difficult ... but if they were really in love, they'd convince me in the end. "I've always believed in a not-so-convenient love relationship. Trials and tribulations infuse a relationship with so much more depth and character, and tenacity." Catch Kit Chan in action when Toy Factory Productions re-stages "December Rains" as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations from August 6 at The Esplanade Theatre.
