The talent which will be on display later this month at the Southeast
Asia Games in Manila will not be confined only to the track, pitch or pool.
Some of the top players in the creative and musical fields have come together
specially to create a song to inspire Singapore athletes who will be competing
in the Games from Nov 25-Dec 5.
Sung by renowed local artiste Kit Chan, the song is titled "Live Our Dreams"
and was composed by Thomas Schonberg.
Schonberg has worked on worldwide productions of Miss Saigon, Les Miserables
and My Fair Lady.
Based in England, the Frenchman recently also put together a special concert
of Les Miserables for the Queen of England and French President Jacques Chirac.
David Tan, who is the director of sports at the Ministry of Community
Development, Youth and Sports, and also the executive producer of the song,
said that he hoped the song would achieve iconic status among Singaporeans.
He was also a lyricist for the song together with Rober Vicencio. The music
was done by Dr Sydney Tan, a prominent music director, arranger and producer.
Schonberg said: "I enjoyed writing the music for a sporting event very much.
But, more than that, it was an immense honour to be writing a song for Team
Singapore.
I have worked with sport-related companies in the past but you cannot compare
anything with writing a sports anthem for a country."
The song will be released next Wednesday in conjunction with the SEA Games
flag-presentation ceremony.
It also marks a milestone in singer Chan's career as she takes a planned
break from the Chinese pop music industry.
A representative for the singer said yesterday that she had just completed a
10-album contract with record company Ocean Butterflies. While she is not
retiring, she will be taking a break in the United States for an indefinite
period.
