SINGAPORE : Among the many things Kit Chan will be doing during
her year-long hiatus in Boston, "taking care of my man" will be
near the top of the list.
The 33-year-old announced earlier this week in a press release
that she would not perform in the Singapore leg of the musical
Snow.Wolf.Lake.
Nonetheless, the response to the show has been encouraging, with
half of the tickets sold.
Kit has acted with Jacky Cheung since the Cantonese version made
its debut in 1997. The current version of the musical is in
Mandarin.
Kit will finally fulfill a promise that she made to herself three
years ago, that is, to take a proper hiatus from performing.
"There was a pact between my boyfriend and I, that only certain
conditions would allow us to postpone taking this break, and one
of them was Snow.Wolf.Lake being performed in Chinese, which I
never thought would happen, but it actually did.
"I said I would only commit until the end of May, otherwise there
would be no end to this," she said.
Taking over Kit's role as the sister of Snow - the violinist trapped
in an ill-fated love affair with carpenter Wolf - is Hong Kong actress
Nnadia Chan.
What Kit will be taking away with her after six months of performing
in various parts of China are some pretty memorable experiences with
a completely different culture, especially in the smaller Chinese cities.
"I remember once I was singing this particularly tragic song, and
usually the audience is so quiet you can hear a pin drop, but for
some reason this audience decided to clap along to the song. I was
so distracted I could not concentrate."
"When I got backstage, my assistant was squatting on the floor,
laughing really hard," she said, giggling.
Now, she's looking forward to a new life in Boston, which she
anticipates will have "amazing energy" since it's a cultural
city close to New York.
"I'll have a rich and meaningful life learning new things.
I want to have the luxury of not knowing when I'll come back
to showbiz," she said.
"That's also kind of scary but I think I've learned to have a
lot of faith in what God has planned out for me."
